Review Summary: Aesthetics out of the ordinary
This time I will present you with a project that I just met a couple of days ago. I’m sorry to have so little information about him, but relatively he seems to be a man who moves between silence, yet music speaks for itself and in the end it’s what matters most. When I first heard, it immediately captivated me and I kept it as an appreciated sonorous treasure, and as nothing is gained in life by being selfish, what better than to recommend him to you.
Ian Hawgood is a British musician and composer. Based in Oxford and Tokyo, in just a few years he has made such a prolific career that I was undoubtedly greatly surprised. On the one hand, as a composer, he is credited with more than 30 EP’s and more than a dozen LP’s. His music shows a brutal depth and sincerity. Most of his compositions are in ambient and drone music, although he also has a lot of material considered as sound art where he explores and experiments more with field sounds.
I found it quite interesting that Ian had a very particular childhood, for a long time he suffered from a certain ear problem that really forced him to have a childhood steeped in deafness. Until the age of 6 his parents realized that it was a bit of a problem more serious than they could ever imagine. However, Ian continued a quiet life as if nothing was happening, in fact, because he belonged to a family of musicians, he studied piano despite his illness and all the related problems, which ironically kept him in a constant relationship of silence and music. ¡Beautiful! Isn’t it?
His music shows a subtlety in the use of details. In several interviews he has narrated the experience of when his hearing came back, he heard the wind blow over his ears, and he was surprised by the freshness that he felt. For me this is a clear example that since then his notion of music was totally different.
Songs like "Tides" and "You Don't Live Here Anymore" are gentle examples of what Ian is capable despite not being "Famous". Give those songs a try, you won't be disappointed.
