Review Summary: Two hours and a half of crushing stoner and drone doom metal from Ukraine… Bomg are a rather obscure Ukrainian quartet, combining really murky stoner doom metal with drone and psychedelia influences. Apart from a couple of splits with other acts, they released just one full length ( Polynseeds) in 2013. During the latter half of the decade, the group kept mostly to themselves, but now we can understand why. Resurfacing almost out of nowhere, Bomg decided to offer us Peregrination, an insane journey that clocks in at around 2 hours and 30 minutes. Comprised of 4 tunes that each could be an LP unto itself, the group held nothing back music-wise. Records such as Sleep’s Dopesmoker, Boris’ Absolutego or Amplifier Worship, as well as Bongripper’s Satan Worshipping Doom or Miserable probably served as starting points. Throw those into a blender, spice it with some Sunn O))) and Electric Wizard vibes and the results are mostly what you hear on this mammoth epic.
Sonically, there is an absurd amount of fuzz and feedback abuse, yet sludgy grooves and various trudging progressions can be traced amid all the chaos. The band often toys with oscillators and brooding synthesizer segments to diversify and create tension which is ultimately relieved through massive outbursts of riffage. If there was one song to sum everything up or a highlight per se, I would choose ‘Paradigm’. Some of the most powerful parts are nicely arranged on it, nevertheless, ‘Emanation’ delivers some immersive strings of riffs too. Of course, there is a considerable amount of indulgence all over Peregrination, however, this type of music needs it in order to achieve the desired atmosphere. Objective trimming wouldn’t do any justice, since that overwhelmingly exhaustive, apocalyptic feeling can be lost. Even so, in this case, polishing the sound just slightly, plus turning the drums and vocals higher in the mix would have done these tunes justice. Unfortunately, at times, they are drowned in the guitar and bass’ muddy delivery. Although too long, I admire Bomg for allocating such patience for this grandiose affair and recommend taking your time and absorb it. If you’re not a hardcore fan of this music genre, better start with shorter, more accessible albums.

Album Rating: 3.5
This is an album for a certain niche, so I kept that in mind while listening to it. If it was half as long, it could have been a very strong LP.

| | | Can't see myself being able to listen to drone for a couple of minutes let alone for two and a half hours haha.
Great review though, perfect length.

Thanks. It has some segments that remind of Boris-like drone, which is feedback and sound effects. There are plenty of riffs haha.
| | | You've been on a roll lately! This sounds interesting though not sure I'm up for the marathon - gotta remember to hop on that Yuri Gagarin record you covered though

Thanks! Check Yuri Gagarin out because it's great! This one is easier if listening to one track per setting. That's how I managed to get into it easier.
| | | 2.5 hours? good lord! I bet Pika has already spun it 5 times
| | | Great review. I feel like this band would be fkn awesome live.

Yeah, they should kill with those downtuned riffs live. Too bad they are not touring.
Haha, yeah, this version is more fitting than the one I submitted. Thank you.
