Review Summary: One of the best Rock EPs of 2018
SafeKept are an independent band from central Ohio that packs a serious musical and lyrical punch. Modern Mortals Pt 1 shows the band in their top form. SafeKept can be described as pop punk vocals with a modern rock flair while maintaining classic rock flourishes. Or just really good rock n roll.
One thing this album offers is infectious melodies and awesome hooks that will stay with you for days. But, this sweet stuff on the surface does not come with a lack of depth. The more you dig into the individual songs the more you recognize the talented songwriting and quality musicianship.
Standouts on this short EP are Comfortable featuring Josh Bramlett of The Protest which is probably the heaviest song in SafeKept’s catalog and Regardless of Melody. I really think the heavier the band gets the better the songs are and this is highlighted in their live shows as well. The riffs and lead guitar lines are original and memorable. The softer moments of this album are good too with emotional weight and lyrical clarity.
The lyrics on Modern Mortals, Pt. 1 could be described as preachy in some contexts but they pack a punch. They are intelligently written and maintain a positive and uplifting vibe while never crossing over into cheesy territory. The themes explored are all things normal people go through and think about in everyday life.
This album does take a hit with the recording quality. Sometimes certain parts lack clarity and the mix is a little muddy with the vocals sounding drowned out by the instruments at times.
Overall, this is a good representation of the band and their quality. This collection of songs is diverse from the uplifting modern rock of Comfortable to the mid tempo and infectious Meet Us Here there is a lot here for rock fans.
This EP is worth your time because of the infectious melodies, catchy riffs, and smart lyrics packed with a positive message.
