Review Summary: do you want to sad jams and chill to Marietta?

The kind of emo/math rock/punk that Forests plays is already inherently charming, filled with a number of tasty, complex-sounding licks and catchy melodies that play directly one after another. These boys refuse to settle just there, however. With lyrics like “I remember you once said that Thom Yorke is the saddest man alive”, combined with the already smooth and interesting instrumentation, it results in a project that’s just hard to hate. The vocalist sounds like a catchier Dylan Mattheisen, working around his way through quite a few huge choruses. Highlights include “Goldust” and “This Town Needs Fun”, the former featuring some crowd vocals and a killer hook, while the latter is delightfully fast-paced with some harsher toned vocals. The entire project is consistent from start to finish and is a great start to the year for mathy emo music.

as far as that over saturated mathy/pop/midwest emo sound goes this is one of the best written of that style

definitely, these dudes are pretty unknown but they really got the whole style down to a science.

Yeah, I wouldn't consider that I highlight. I enjoy myself some good cheese, but that sounds like it's pushing it for me. This is especially a concern with an emo release since lyrical content is a big part of that genre's identity

I'm such a sucker for this sound, but then again, I am a literal mid-west emo so I guess it makes sense.

It’s cheesier written down than it is in action.
