Review Summary: Chapter 2.5: Left Unfinished

I’ll try to keep this quick:

Described as an “unfinished full-length” by Leary and as a “single with additional songs” by Haynes, Cream Corn from the Socket of Davis is a bridging EP, easing the sharp turn from the repulsive, noisier Psychic… Powerless… Another Man’s Sac… to the much more psychedelic and flowing Rembrandt Pussyhorse. Beyond that, however, this release is a head-scratching one, with much of its content feeling much more like table scraps than fully formed, finished songs. That said, it is important to note that the production featured on side A is much different than past releases, with larger, heavier drum-tones and a deeper bottom end. Side B, however, features a recording quality similar to Butthole Surfer (maybe even worse), but with the less-battered art-punk/rock vibe used on Rembrandt Pussyhorse (which was technically released first but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there).

As for the songs themselves, they leave a bit to be desired. “Moving to Florida” has a solid, recurring bass riff despite ultimately being a joke song. “Comb” is a slow-paced slew of sludgy tones and incoherent, distorted vocals, complete with fitting vomit samples (perhaps the most apt in any song by them, this sht is gross). The B-side tracks, “To Parter” and “Tornadoes,” are much more cohesive and complete songs, although these originals don’t hold a candle to the Double Live version, nor do they seriously threaten the songs saved for full-lengths.

I guess it is interesting to see a short record from the group that dips into the two albums that sandwich it, but it’s ultimately not fruitful. It does, in a way, feel like an unfinished piece of something else, and it’s important to note that this was released in the meantime of label troubles with Alternative Tentacles, whose name will stop showing up so much soon. No matter the conditions surrounding this one, however, it’s decent material brought down by inconsistent production and an insubstantial release.

yeah i used to like it a lot more but it feels like a release made because they needed to put something out (which i suspect since they were in between labels and probably needed money but idk)
