Review Summary: Psych-influenced auditory reflections on living by the sea.
If you want to know what it’s like to grow up on the coast, hear here. Thrift’s latest EP 3/5 couldn’t encapsulate that feeling more. These tracks are melodic and airy, with catchy drum hooks and more than a nod towards their psychedelic roots. Bedroom, practice room, underground venue; you can already feel the journey this band are able to take you on by enveloping you with their enchanting sound.
With more than a touch of Badly Drawn Boy’s vocal tones and scrumptious harmonies [Same Same; Widows Bed] it’s easy to get lost in the musical images being painted. Close your eyes and take in the cliffy breeze of the backing vocals [Caesar’s Camp] and enjoy the gratifyingly smooth transitions of Tell Me.
It’s clear Thrift’s focus is on creating soundscapes that leave you no option but to be present in the endorphins you’re producing. This EP gives you a real flavour of the relaxed and positive vibe these guys have soaked up from living by the sea and translated into auditory waves.
Imagine a dimly-lit stage, musicians working together to produce a sound-cuddle, and being able to let go of everything. 3/5 will take you there; promise.
