Review Summary: I’m tired.

It’s three in the morning, and I’m listening to the new Weeknd project, My Dear Melancholy,. That’s with the comma. Word doesn’t like that. Word doesn’t like Weeknd either. Maybe it’s a metaphor for something. Who cares. Anyway. The new project from once-enjoyable artist The Weeknd finds itself going around in circles. It’s all drenched in this heavy reverb on each layer of his vocals, and I only notice because it’s on every fucking song. It makes me really tired. I want to go to bed. I want to sleep on the bed of slow hi-hats in ‘Try Me’, but this ear-piercing noise on ‘I Was Never There’ keeps interrupting the process of drifting off. The Weeknd (with a red line underneath) has a great voice, but it’s so heavily altered that you’d be hard-pressed to find a vocal line that isn’t drowning in production. It worked on Beauty Behind The Madness, when he was making more accessible pop tunes. But with a heavy R&B flavour, it just makes me sleepy. The EP doesn’t try anything new. Maybe it was trying to be chill. Who knows. It’s a snore-fest that struggles to ever actually gain my attention. I’m going to bed now. This one’s staying off though. Slow-burning isn’t really my thing. And the vocals on 'Wasted Times' sorta creep me out.

1.5/5

I enjoy The Weeknd's music as much as Drifter enjoys R. Kelly's music. Let's just put it that way.

So, I disagree, but I digress. Cheers, butcher!

How would you place this against his last few albums, Joe? (Excellent review, Drubbi.)

I don't agree... I think this is perfect what it is... a smaller release, bringing back the authenticity of his original sound with the production value of his newer work... I think it's exactly what his career needed, and music in general... a little bit repetitive and overly downcast at times, but I think it's a great release. A solid 4 if not 4.5/5 in my opinion

Disagreed hard but I see where you're coming from. I think this project is easily the best material he has put out in years lyrically and production wise. Plus it's only an EP so the 6 songs here are very cohesive and create a great atmosphere

Abel has amazing singles, but his compiled efforts always fall flat. Maybe one day he'll figure it out and make the best RnB record of the century.

Probably not, tho.
