The Hives-Tyrannosaurus Hives

During the garage rock explosion of nearly 3 years ago happened, The Hives were one of the main bands caught in the hype. Now this was fine for them, whatever brought the money in for the band playing the music they love would make them happy. But they never once classed themselves with any of these other bands, simply because, they werenâ¬"t. In fact if you were to say to them that they were thought of as â¬Üanother garage rock fad bandâ¬" then they would be surprised and reply with more attitude than a fox â¬Üreally?!â¬"
So for the band who knew exactly what their â¬Ümajor hitâ¬" album became, and what other people thought about them to, and knew exactly what music they wanted to continue making, it was surely obvious that their next album, â¬ÜTyrannosaurus Hivesâ¬" was going to be a complete counter-attack of the slightly superficial popularity if â¬ÜYour New Favourite Bandâ¬". After all to the band, all â¬ÜYour New Favourite Bandâ¬" was meant to be was an obvious attempt to get bands to copy The Hives. They, with that record were making their own power in the music industry without even doing that much. They wanted more bands that play the music they love to emerge into the big time. But it didnâ¬"t seem to be working. So this was the result.
However, this is possibly their most challenging album to music yet. As here, they are showing incredibly smart lyrics, a really dynamic edge to their music, and an attitude that probably wonâ¬"t ever stop growing. The albums opener â¬ÜAbra Cadaverâ¬" is basically the hives at their best. Playing the great garage rock/punk rock music they love with great emotion, lyrics being shouted across by Pelle and Nicholaus and all in all a great track. â¬ÜTwo-Timing touch and broken bonesâ¬" however is their first dive into the smarter lyrics, and well evolved music The Hives have now divulged into. This being their song about their record deal being sold by epitaph/Burning Heart Records. Musically, this a great piece too. All instruments complementing each other and calling and responding.
Now, the single â¬ÜWalk, Idiot Walk,â¬" may sound innocent enough being their most recent â¬Scommercialâ¬? song. But actually, this song is a brutal attack at everyone who classed The Hives with any other band, and whatâ¬"s even more brilliant about it is the irony that, because people arenâ¬"t even listening to their proof that they arenâ¬"t like any other band, this song could well carry on justifying The Hivesâ¬" position as a fad to those who donâ¬"t listen.
The next few songs donâ¬"t lose momentum either, with â¬ÜNo Pun Intendingâ¬" being a response to everyone who though The Hives were a joke of a band, and musically, the brilliant â¬ÜB is for Brutusâ¬". This track as a whole has brilliant work between all instruments, vocals ET all, and is a highlight of the album for sure. The Biggest surprise of the album however, is â¬ÜDiabolic Schemeâ¬". An amazing nu-wave punk song, whichâ¬"s most obvious influences, can be pointed straight at The Cure. A fantastic song with amazing string samples use, and Pelle really showing what he can do vocally, and possibly if best described here as â¬Ücrooningâ¬" and overall shows the bandâ¬"s eclectic and general musical ability. â¬ÜMissing Linkâ¬" is proof that this is an album for all Hives fans too, as it is easily the most predictable to The Hivesâ¬" sound, standing at just under 2 minutes and being a general punk fusion that they are so good at doing.
This album is one of an evolving band, and was an adventurous one at that. But thereâ¬"s no doubt here that they got the point across, that they are not just another garage rock fad, and that this album did what intended to do, prove themselves. However, it almost seems like a bridge. Either to their best album yet, or to the end of the band, it seems extreme, but that really is what this album seems to show. But im sure you would be with me when we say â¬Swe would prefer the former to happenâ¬?.

Yes, it is customary to add a final rating to a review.

"Walk, Idiot, Walk" is my guilty pleasure. That guitar line is so sleazy and cool. I dig it.

Am I the only one who found the album way too short considering how long it took them to make it? It's just under the 30 minute mark with most songs well under 3 minutes. It's still a great album, especially "Abra Cadaver".

I'm surprised, this appears to be the only Hives review that's been done.

I've got a soft spot for the Hives, and though I haven't heard this album yet, I probably will at some point.

oh yeah... haha, the rating.

4/5.

This album didnt take very long to make at all... they just didnt make it till recently.

They themselves felt that they didnt need to until now and after sorting out all this record company ****, they havent had that much of an opportunity till recently.

But The Hives' music has always been, fast, short and straight to the point. Its excactly whar they want to do, so obviously they do it. So I dont think the fact that the albums length is under 30 minutes (although we got two bonus tracks so its over actually). Yeah, 'Abra Cadaver' is one of my favourite tracks too.

To be honest, I hate the Hives, but I really can't get that guitar part to their new song out of my head.

the new hives cd rocks. its fast, furious and fun. pelle's impressed me with his excellent lyrics/howling vocals. all songs are great, no skip over tracks. its a great cd to listen to from begining to end. stand out tracks include "no pun intended" "little more for little you" and "love in plaster". i thought the string/ochestra samples from diaobolic scheme were pure genious. it might just be me, but the guitar parts really remind me of ska chord guitar, but it might just be me cause im a big ska fan. Tyrannosaurous Hives= 4.5/5 stars

If you listen closely to "Walk Idiot walk" you can hear jingle bells in the background.

Its a good day to be Pelle "Howlin Wolf" Almquist and his merry band of fast playing, evil last name Swedes. Their new album Tyrannosaurus Hives their sound is minimalism but there is absoluting nothing missing. On the opening track "Abra Cavader" they make your heart beat a 100 miles per hour while making you cringe with delight with the "ballad'' "Diabolic Scheme". this record also showcases Pelle's superb skills as a frontman. In a world of emo whines, pop punk teenage angst, and nu metal rage, Pelle is certainly apart of a whole new breed of frontmen that are emerging. In all truth, the Hives should be the biggest band in the whole world instead of your hoobastanks and Evanessences. they have catchy hooks and sing a long lyrics that make you want to twist and shout. Plus Hives music is for EVERYONE, recordstore nerds, skater kids, punks, 40 somethings, mods, and even little kids. Its a little slower paced than VENI VIDI VICOIUS but this one is still a winner.

4 out of 5

Thanks. I prefer merging to deleting when possible - his post is fine as a comment within a thread, just not as a review on it's own (and the review was already done, anyway).

Am I the only one who detected a slight change in Pelle Almqvist's voice? Almost like a newfound maturity or something. Not that it's a bad thing, I just thought I noticed the tiniest of changes.

Just putting a line between each paragraph would make reading it much easier.
