One-X, Three Days Grace's sophmore albulm, is based on the experiences of Adam Gontier while he was on the road. Adam finds himself in a sense in utter loneliness that comes from the constant surroundings of other people. This album, I find, is fairly well written, I'm not saying I could do any better, but it doesn't really make you think about anything. Some people may like that, some people may like lyrics that force them to think of the wider picture. I find only one other problem with the lyrics, he seems to be talking about the same over and over again. I know that this albulm is about loneliness, but it seems like all he talk about is a woman, which kind of annoys me, because that's what mostly all the bands talk about these days.
It's All Over-- A very appropriate opener for a CD, the intro is much like Burn, the opener to their self-titled album. Very quiet, then into some hard chords. The verse is very strong in this song, the chorus not so much, but still strong. 4/5
Pain-- This song starts out with a very softer version of the chorus. The verse is pretty good, at best, the chorus is good too. I find that the highlight of this song is the bridge. This song seems very basic to me, but still is a fairly strong song. 3.8/5
Never Too Late-- This song is about suicide, another favoured topic by bands today. Although the topic is over done, the song is really good, although the song layout is very basic (intro-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus again) The song is written well, my favourite part of the song is the ending of the chorus where he starts yelling, not hardcore yelling, but still yelling. 4.2/5
Animal I have Become-- A perfect first single, the guitar riff is very catchy and so is the chorus. It's all you want for a first single. I find the bridge very strong in this song too. There isn;t much too say about this song, it's really good though. 4.5/5
On My Own-- I've read some short reviews about this song, no one seems to like it that much. I must say it's one of my favourites. The verse is a little boring though, but I love the chorus in this song. When they fade out Adam's voice near the end of the song, is probably the best part of this song. 4/5
Riot--One of the hardest songs on the abulm, the guitar isn't typical Three Days Grace style either (which is mostly power chords). The verse is pretty strong, I don't really like the chorus to this song though. The bridge is pretty good, the guitar is the highlight of this song, as well when Adam does the sort of grunty thing with his voice. 3.8/5
Get Out Alive-- At first, i wasn't crazy about this song, but it has really grown on me. The writting in this song, I find, is very strong. When Adam sings with the guitar it sounds really good ( when he lowers the tone of his voice with the guitar). 3.5/5
Let It Die-- I really love this song, it sounds different from the rest of the songs. It stands out with the accoustic, as well as the chorus does, it's really catchy. Just after the ending of the bridge, when they start the chorus again, it sounds really good as well. 4.3/5
Over & Over-- Although it is the slowest song on the album, it is probably my favourite. The transition between the verse and the chorus is amazing, the chorus is really catchy. It is definately a stand out on the albulm. 4.7/5
Time of Dying-- It's a good thing they put another hard song here, I thought they were getting soft one me. This is not a stand out, the verse is alright, little repetitive though. Again, the chorus is catchy, they are all getting stuck in my head. 3.8/5
Gone Forever-- Another soft one, well the verse is sort of. The chorus isn't that hard either, but once again catchy. The guitar is very basic too, but who really cares it sounds good. The bridge isn't bad either... but the chorus is the higlight of the song. 4/5
One-X-- The title track, as you may have noticed, is probably one of the strongest songs on the album. I don't really like title tracks, because i expect so much of them, but this passes my expectations. This song is about the odd ones, loners, the weird one, etc. I have never really heard a song about this, that's why I like it, it's original. I really like how this song (and almost all of the others) go slow during verses, then faster/harder during the chorus. They end the albulm with the line "We stand above the crowd", which is a very appropriate ending to this albulm.
Overall, this albulm was more mature then the last one, I didn't find any of the songs just to be fillers. The choruses are strong in this album, as well as some bridges. I think Three Days Grace needs to wrork a bit more on some of their verses, which get boring sometimes.A very good albulm. 4/5
