Flogging Molly: 2nd Studio Album
Drunken Lullabies
If you couldnt listen to Swagger, Just know that Flogging Molly music is Raw, Mellow, Outrageous, and most of all: TRUE.
This band kicks out everything you hate about MTV (guy vocals who sound like girls, crappy mainstream rip-off music that we are all sick of, etc)
This band if different, It will ROCK YOUR WORLD, If you let it.
Content:
1. Drunken Lullabies: Alright this song is mainly a "grabber", as in, it shows off fast paced instrument variety and is generally a very cool song, most new listeners would probably think of this song when thinking about Flogging Molly. As far as i know, the meaning of this song is about how being drunk is as stupid as hatred and war.
2. What's Left of the Flag: The fiddle absolutely blew me away on this one. Powerful lyrics and some hard distortion on the electric guitar early on.
3. May The Living Be Dead: Fiddle player Bridget Regan switches from the fiddle to the tin whistly only to blow us away again. Very consistent rhythm throughout song.
4. If I Ever Leave This World Alive: This song is the song that gives you a moment to rest between tracks and think about what you would do if you left this world alive (duh). more powerful lyrics by Dave King
5. The Kilburn High Road: This song is interesting because although it keeps a consistent rhythm, it seems like the rhythm can get old, but it really doesent. The tin whistle and the electric guitar solo keeps it interesting.
6. Rebels of the Sacred Heart: If you listened to the previous 5 tracks, getting in this track would be no problem, more great tin whistling and the drum and bass percussion really help. I think this song is about being a rebel while knowing the challenges that come with it.
7. Swagger: Shredding electric guitar solo and brisk fiddling to follow shortly after, and goes on for a couple minutes ranting about being drunk (?). This song sounds great live!
8. Cruel Mistress: Bassist Nathan Maxwell steals the mic here. And this song could have not have been done with anyone else! very good electric guitar and a very effective mandolin performance.
9. Death Valley Queen: A powerful song about a tragedy of a man who lost his lover and gave up on her to a whore. "So I found me a whore with a face just like yours." Bridget did an excellent performance with the fiddle
10. Another Bag of Bricks: Standout Banjo performance by Bob Schmidt. And the accordian and drums really make this song come to life. A really outrageous and neccesary song.
11. The Rare Ould Times: Slow intro follows to the traditional Flogging Molly speed that we all know and love. Vocals were improvised very well by King.
12. The Son Never Shines (On Closed Doors): very powerful song about Dave King's mother who he finally got to visit after many years of exile, and his mother did not recognize his sons face. The song is called: "The SON Never Shines", not "The SUN Never Shines" Get it?
Conclusion: The album is structured very well for easy digestion, New listeners ought to start with this album.
