Review Summary: Into the gaping maw of the beast.

If ever the bastard son of Satan were to spawn from the depths of hell and manifest itself into a sound, then the sound would almost definitely be Wisdom of Darkness. This is a release by a fairly unknown Finnish band by the name of Belial. They formed in 1991 and have an unfortunately short lived existence, dropping out of existence from the Finnish Black metal scene in 1994. Thankfully, they left an ugly, grotesque, immaculate record in their wake. Welcome to Wisdom of Darkness.

This EP does an incredible job weaving atmosphere and sheer riffage into a short package (only 20 minutes). Off of the intro (simply titled “Intro”) there are some cold, desolate synths that do a good job of creating a mournful, unforgiving atmosphere. Moments like these weave themselves about this record, perhaps most perfectly off the ending of “Of Servant Of Belial”, which, after crushing riffs and blast beats paired with some monstrous growls, leads into a quaint and somber spoken word ending. This balance is played off straight until the very end when one of the most furious tracks off this record surges through. "Voices Beyond" obliterates with stellar riffs and raw balls-to-the-wall blast beats. Honestly, this record is like beauty and the beast, if beauty were a deceptive siren luring you to your death.

This record might pack a hell of a punch in it's short run time, but there’s really only so many ways I can say what makes this EP amazing without coming across an overbearing, numbskull metalhead. So i’ll spare you the redundant descriptors and annoying metaphors. What I will say, however, is that if you desire something that is relentless and unabashedly sinister, then look no further. You have already found the beast.

Short write up for an amazing although short EP. Any suggestions (e.g do quotes or italics look better? I can't really decide).

I should also add this band is more so a blend of Black and Death metal although I see the Black metal side more, mostly because of it's overall atmosphere and somewhat through the instrumentation.

jk

"fairly unknown Finnish band"
this... is kinda true in that they were indeed a pretty underground act during their run, but they definitely saw some newfound credit when their old shit surfaced online and ppl started digging. i guess they're "relatively unknown" but i feel like you're obligated to comment a bit further if you're even gonna bother going the biographical route, but i guess whatever.

"Moments like these weave themselves about this record"
weird wording, and you already say "weaving" in a previous sentence so I'd use a different term anyway.

"This record might pack a hell of a punch in it's short run time"
its*

"Honestly, this record is like beauty and the beast"
really cliche simile. would've liked something a bit more impactful seeing as this a pretty brutal lil number - i feel like people who are already familiar with this will be glad it has a review (except my boi Zip), but new listeners might not really be left convinced. imo, if you're gonna review a classic, some more elaboration on the album's significance can't hurt

Classic? I've never seen anyone actually refer to or talk about this record. Never seemed big to me. I'd write more about this but like how much can I really write about a 20 minute EP, ya know?

"I've never seen anyone actually refer to or talk about this record."
the band is included on about 20 or so lists on here (and this particular album is on 13). not a huge number but quite a few DM fans are aware of it

Really? Damn, kind of surprised considering it doesn't even have a whole lotta ratings here. I'm really big into DM and only heard about this a few days ago (pls do not mind my stupid first DM list lol I do know more then I had let on, however maybe not a whole lotta truly "obscure" DM).

Nice write-up man. With the italics vs quotes thing, I like to use single quotes for song titles, italics for albums, and if I do quote lyrics I use double quotes. Imo the italics for album makes it easier for stuff like this: "Welcome to Wisdom of Darkness" - due to the capitalisation I thought this whole thing was the title until I scrolled up.

Yeah this is pretty commonly considered an underground classic. Don't trust your own perception 3D because the underground metal world is much bigger than what you've seen

I suppose it's bigger than what any metal fan has seen for that matter but yeah you're right dude. To be fair in the scope of things most extreme metal is technically unknown, like if you compare what extreme metal (for sake of reference, I mean mostly Black/Death metal) fans listen to the general metal fandom's favorite metal bands you'd be pairing the likes of idk Inquisition with something like Metallica or Trivium, which of course the latter set dwarf Inquisition's popularity. However I still get it, Belial in the underground of Black/Death metal might be really big and I wouldn't know because the underground of any genre is huge. It's like unearthing fossils, really. You never know what there, is how many there and what gems you might find. All you know is what you've found.

I'm actually amazed that you could even gather that much information man. It's really weird, I never really hear about Black metal pre-Bathory/Venom, or of all these smaller bands that really were painting the scene. Which brings me to see where all of this was initially forming. I mean I knew about bands like Sarcophago and Euronymous's fascination with them and Sepultura and the overall Brazil BM scene, but I didn't know it was actually that influential to the scene as a whole. Hell, i'm only more recently discovering that "original BM" exists outside of Scandinavia and Greece. Anyway though you should definitely make another list one day man, hell make a fucking book on BM. You really know your shit.
