Review Summary: Keep me from sinking down...

One has to admire Jay Farrar’s persistence. After the untimely demise of Uncle Tupelo, Farrar formed Son Volt, while the band’s other songwriter Jeff Tweedy formed Wilco. In 1995, it looked like Farrar was going to come out the better of the two, as Son Volt’s debut album Trace was far better than Wilco’s now virtually forgotten A.M. This was surprising to few; Farrar had undoubtedly been the better songwriter in Uncle Tupelo. But before Son Volt could make its next move, Wilco dropped Being There, vastly improving on the songwriting and beating Farrar at his own game. The rest is history: Wilco went on to become one of the most acclaimed acts of the last couple decades while Son Volt has faded into relative obscurity. Nonetheless, Farrar seems not to have let his former bandmates’ success faze him, and here we are now in 2017 with Son Volt’s 8th album, Notes of Blue.

While Son Volt in the past have primarily stuck to their winning alt-country formula, Notes of Blue sees them spicing things up a bit. The approach is still unmistakably alt-country, but, as suggested by the title, this album sees them incorporating blues flavors into the mix. Tracks like “Static”, “Lost Souls”, and “Sinking Down” boast deliciously dirty blues-rock riffs and infectious energy. These tunes are balanced out by more atmospheric acoustic Americana numbers such as “The Storm” and “Cairo and Southern”, which see Farrar taking a more reflective lyrical approach. On the album’s best song “Back Against the Wall”, the tune that is the most similar to the band’s 90s material, Farrar acts as a reassuring force, insisting that persistence will be rewarded. Here, as on other songs, he sounds like a man who has been through hardship and come out of it for the better. The whole affair is grounded by Farrar’s ever-impressive vocals. With his rich, deep voice, the man was made to sing these kinds of songs, and even though the songwriting here does not always present him at his very best, he consistently infuses his lines with impressive conviction.

All in all, despite clocking in at a mere 30 minutes, Notes of Blue makes for a nicely balanced listen. The brevity of most of the songs and the variety of sounds on display keep it fresh across the whole runtime. While Farrar has historically gotten the short end of the sitck, Notes of Blue shows that he is still going strong and has no intentions of stopping anytime soon. It’s the work of a group who know their craft well and are content to keep doing it for the love of the music. Some artists we go to to challenge us; some, like Son Volt, we return to for the comfort of knowing that they’re still there for us, like an old friend who will always have our backs.

Yes, Boney used the word "riffs" in a review.

This is a bit shorter than my other reviews and a bit rough, but I wanted to get something out for this before too long had passed as this came out a few weeks ago already.

Top review Boney, think you might be underrating this just a little bit, the guitar sound here is good as it gets. Maybe it's a bit short but I quite like the fact it's all killer no filler. Pos.

Thanks Doof. I think the sound here is great but the songwriting is a bit weak in spots, not sure how well I got that through in the review. Tunes like "Back Against the Wall" and "Sinking Down" are pretty undeniable though.

Yeah I got that from the review, I've only spun this three times and I've only spun the debut once and none of the rest of their stuff...so it might be Drive-by Truckers all over again. If these tunes are 'weaker than earlier material' retreads I'm unaware of that, but I like all the songs here so far in my early stages of listening.

The best quality of this is definitely the rawness/guitar sound.

I've been listening to this and Trace a lot as well as their second album Straightaways, sampled a handful of other tunes from across their discog too, it all seems like very solid stuff to me.

Nice dan, hope you enjoy. These guys are Wilco's musical brother basically as I describe in the first paragraph. You should enjoy this more than Schmilco though ;-]

Good review Boney, you're doing God's work by reviewing the smaller groups :]

I do feel like the transition from the end of the 2nd paragraph to the 3rd paragraph was somewhat, errrr awkward personally. But I remember having the toughest of times transitioning with smaller reviews and albums like these, so I don't know of any advice to give. You're the man, regardless. Keep it up! Pos'd!

Thanks ALA, yeah I struggled a bit with closing this, I think it works well enough though. Ending a review is definitely the hardest part for me.

So far I feel like my review quality more or less corresponds to the rating of the album (which is kind f awkward as that makes my first review my best as that was a 5/5) - it's easier to write well about those higher rated albums as you've spent more time with them, a somewhat middle hitter like this is tougher.

Thanks Full. Closing sentence is a tiny bit bs as I've only recently gotten into this band (though I've known some Uncle Tupelo stuff for a while) but I can already tell they're that kind of act, and it's a relevant point because the Wilco comparison is obviously kind of inevitable with these guys.

This band is good but a lot of their albums sound similar. The review makes this sound interesting tho so will check.

I've only heard Trace from this lot which I have to say is a tad overrated but I'll give this a go. More importantly a boney review. Nice.
