An image of Zakk Wylde would consist of three things; lots of facial hair, pinch harmonics and the sign of an egotistic front man. What is exactly wrong with him? Well, there are his advantages and disadvantages. His advantages are that he is a decent guitarist and thousands believe the whole bigheaded front man image. He has a lot of disadvantages. What’s up with the pinch harmonics? It’s cool to have some in certain places but he puts them in every possible place and it sounds like crap, to put it at least. His riffs are boring, he is pretty bad with riffs, and they show no personality at all and are simply to put it, boring. His voice is in the same key the whole album it seems and they sound doubled half the time. He has a boring, one tone voice which never goes out of the same key. His lyrics are quite shallow and don’t use any decent metaphors or interesting adjectives.
Well as you can simply see, the bad outweigh the good and it is pretty clear to see. Zakk just has a lot of things wrong with him that makes him so annoying. Craig (the drummer) isn’t a mastermind at his instrument and just do some boring beats. No great fills or anything remotely interesting. James is an okay bassist but he isn’t out of this world amazing. The guitars have too much bass anyway to clearly hear him anyway. The overall musicianship is decent but could be improved on a lot. The song writing is really bad though, never really extraordinary at all. Some songs are intriguing while the rest just sound like each other.
Half the songs are head banging metal songs but they are so similar that it makes it hard to listen to the whole album. They all contain the same things, pinch harmonics, bland riffs and Zakk’s one tone voice. They aren’t a lot of songs, which are different from this formula except from the obvious In This River, which is supposed to be a Dimebag tribute song. This song would have been a half-decent ballad if it weren’t for the out of place solo. The song is supposed to be slow and moving yet Zakk just goes all out and starts soloing frantically. What is the point in that? I’ll tell you that Zakk just likes to show-off and that’s probably one of the reasons he pisses me off. The solo is supposed to be a Dimebag tribute but even so, it doesn’t go along with the song or anything, Dimebag tribute or not.
This album isn’t goddamn awful even if it is pretty average. Some songs are quite good. The ones I like are Fire It Up, Suicide Messiah and You Must Be Blind. Fire It Up being the opener of the album, it has to be represent of the album’s sound and does mildly achieve that. It starts off with either a weird guitar effect or Zakk is using a talk box. It’s probably the talk box but whatever. This is a bit of an okay song but the riff is just so bland. It’s an all right metal song but it isn’t anything amazing. Suicide Messiah is a single I think of Zakk with a big leather jacket on and on a motorbike (see the image I was talking about earlier?). Again, the riff is bland but you can’t help but head bang to it. The song has some decent double bass and a catchy hook but again, it doesn’t have anything for me to grip to. You Must Be Blind is probably the heaviest out of those three songs I said. The song is slightly heavier but oh look, another bland riff. The song is quite repetitive but includes some nice parts.
This album isn’t absolutely awful but it is very average. It’s bland and none of the tracks really differ from each other. It’s very hard to listen to all the way through and you’ll notice on first listen that you can’t tell the tracks apart. If you want this for a party then this would be quite cool to play in the background but as an actual listening experience, this is dull stuff.

Album Rating: 3.5
The first half of your review was just you bashing Zakk Wylde. Hes more than a "decent" guitarist, hes a phenominal solo writer, after seeing him live i went home shell shocked after his solos. If you listen to ANY heavy metal, most singers stay in mostly one tone, its just part of the genre, and its nothing out of the ordinary on this album.
I can see where youre coming from on your perspective on the riffs being bland. Its just something you have to appreciate to like. Though I think from your review, you would like the song Dirt on the Grave cause thats a change from the rest of the album.

What the hell? How did we get to what the image of Zakk Wylde consists of to "What is exactly wrong with him?" have you heard of a thing called a transition? Its used to connect ideas!

Did you need to repeat the same idea in sentences right after one another? But other than that I agree that besides a few great songs most BLS songs are very average sounding, and not what I would expect from Zakk Wylde.
| | | Yeah, you pretty much nailed it with this review. This album is about as average as metal can get.
| | | What the hell? You changed your name after I did, but mine hasn't converted.
Nice work, I like some BLS.
"Fire It Up" sucks though.
| | | Don't you have to have the Sputnik mods convert it for Sputnik.
| | | "In This River" has one of the most pointless solos I've ever heard.
| | | I liked the review, Frogs.
| | | Ruined the song completely. Have you seen the video, chese to the max.
| | | Little Dime and Zack riding their bikes! Awwwww!
| | | Are you scared Dime, yeah Zakk, well lets go!!!!!!
| | | I guess Zakk also has a secret hatred of pianos.
He chopped that thing up like he did the song with that "solo".
| | | Yeah, well Rednecks don't like pianos. It was funney how both Zakk and Dime looked like trailer trash.
| | | Irony is that Zakk was a pretty boy circa whenever.
He must've blown the budget on beer. That explains the mullet wigs.
| | |
| | | drunken viking, how do u do that laughing smilie face?
| | | "I guess Zakk also has a secret hatred of pianos."
no, he plays pianos, he also isnt afraid of playing pretty things on an acoustic guitar, stop bashing him, he is more than a drunk with an obsession with pinch harmonicsThis Message Edited On 06.03.06
