Review Summary: 32 minutes that will brand you forever. With 6 albums in the bag, New York based singer songwriter Nina Nastasia is no stranger to success nor obscurity. A usual customer of Mr. Steve Albini's hard-hitters factory, Nina has gifted the public with several well acclaimed releases, but among all of them, "Run to Ruin" stands out like a black swan in a pond of colorful ducks.
Released in 2003 by indie record label Touch and Go, home of Henry Rollins, Don Caballero, Slint and Urge Overkill to name a few glories, "Run to Ruin" is an excellent receipt of folk adorned with chamber music instrumentation and Nina's very special laid back and cherishing voice. This is the short story as there is much more to "Run to Ruin", especially regarding Nina's bewildering lyrics in tracks like "You Her and Me", a song about an accomplice kidnapping, the sublime, black and white film grain of "Regrets", which features plenty of noir imagery, or the savagery of the initial verses of "The Body", sang in classic folk fashion with Nina exploring and successfully delivering some of her best vocal performance in the album.
In all honesty, the album bleeds profusely, whispering tales that are left better untold but that are here conveyed with raging violins and cellos, furious drumming and relentless finger picking. From the sluggish opening chords of "We Never Talked", Nina sets the tone from the very first note. She won't lie to you. This is the kind of stuff that would kill a conversation with a stranger in a party but she trusts in that you will listen to the full story. That confidence is rewarded with every track going further, step by step, like a frightening walk home at 4 AM through the city with a wallet full of cash and shamelessly drunk, just to arrive home to sex yourself to songs like the album’s closer, "While We Talk", rejoicing to the fact that you are safe (and sexing yourself), but hopeless to the ugly truth that translates this last exciting moment you just had as the last drop of hairless fun that is already dying with the weekend.
Because yes, "Run to Ruin" is that good, addicting enough to keep shoving you to its charming melodies again and again in spite of the sour aftertaste, a hungover that only heals letting Nina do her magic to make you hers, finding relief in the ever watching shadows of the city’s dancing lights.

Short write-up cause this was more difficult that I thought, but I promised brother Doof I would take care of this one. Hope you guys dig it. The album is dope.

Brother Doof approves, quality write up, pos.
Is 'sexing yourself' a polite way of saying 'spanking the plank'?
| | | Indeed, I leave that opened to the imagination because every mariner has different ways of "polishing the cutlass", if you catch my drift.
Thanks for the pos Doofus.

| | | God bless you for those edits Blush, made the corrections right away.
Yeah man! English is not my first language so my reviews may not be as rich as other brilliant reviews I have read on Sput but I guess it doesn't harm to give it a shot and improve my skills in the way.
| | | No problem, man. Between this and June, I'd never have guessed English wasn't your first language. For a second review, this is really good, very excited to see what you have in store in the future. ((:
| | | Thanks man! I am doing Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man's Out of Season next but it's a tough one so I will take my sweet time with it. Definitely check it if you are a fan of Portishead.
