Release Date: 1979 | Tracklist

Review Summary: Reggatta de Blanc stands the test of time as one of the greatest albums of the post-punk and new wave era, improving in almost every way upon The Police's debut album.

The Police’s second album, 1979’s Reggatta de Blanc, improves in almost every way upon their debut Outlandos d’Amour with catchy riffs and slick reggae grooves, coupled with superb instrumentation and lyrics. The classic opening guitar line in the single “Message In A Bottle” is enough to draw the listener in and keep them interested for the whole 42 minute album. The Police further mix their punk rock roots with reggae and jazz influences to create an album that has great variety in song structure and feeling while retaining the energy of their previous album.

The instrumentation by The Police is superb on Reggatta de Blanc. Stewart Copeland brings his drumming to the forefront on this album with his loose yet technically brilliant playing on songs like “Walking On The Moon,” “Contact,” and the title track “Reggatta de Blanc.” The cymbal work on “Contact” and “Walking On The Moon” is nothing short of extraordinary, as Copeland mixes complex rhythms on the cymbals and drum fills with his inherent metronome on the kick and snare drums. “Reggatta de Blanc” won The Police the 1980 Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance and it is easy to see why when listening. Copeland pounds out intricate polyrhythms on the drums while Sting provides the driving bass line and vocal chant, and Andy Summers lays down echoic guitar chords overtop to create an amazing sound collage.

Reggatta de Blanc took a mere four weeks to record, and was entirely financed by profits from The Police’s debut album Outlandos d’Amour. This gave the band total creative control over the music on the album and it profits as a result. Some have criticized the lack of planning and organization that led to The Police using little new material and using elements of old songs to create new ones, but Reggatta de Blanc still shines despite the presence of a few filler songs. “On Any Other Day” and the last two songs “Does Everyone Stare” and “No Time This Time” specifically feel like songs that were intended just to fulfil the time requirements of the album, in fact “No Time This Time” was already used as a B-side for the single “So Lonely” off their first album. However these gap-filling songs are forgotten in the presence of fantastic tracks like the single “Walking On The Moon,” a smooth reggae influenced track that became one of The Police’s best known songs, and “The Bed Is Too Big Without You,” which showcases each band member’s unique instrumental style.

Reggatta de Blanc is perhaps the best album by The Police; every song with a few minor time-filling exceptions is catchy and expertly performed. The album was a huge success, reaching number one on the UK charts along with its two main singles “Message In A Bottle” and “Walking On The Moon.” The Police perfected their inimitable blend of reggae, punk rock, and new wave on this album and it was their last power trio album of the 1970’s before synths took over in the 80’s. Reggatta de Blanc stands the test of time as one of the greatest albums of the post-punk and new wave era, and rewards the listener time and time again.

You write some excellent reviews, concise but full of interesting details, pos. Have a second spiritual pos for the rating, this album deserved a classic review. I really love it, the darker tone is what really gets me (even On Any Other Day turns out to be rather cruel when you hear the happy birthday chant). Message in a Bottle, Walking on the Moon, Bring on the Night, Deathwish, No Time This Time... incredible stuff. Surprised you don't dig that much the last song, it's definitely in my top 3 here.

Easily my favorite Police and one of my favorite albums in general, sentimentally is a 5 but I'm unsure about rating it as such because one thing it inherited from the debut is the presence of a few tracks that I rarely listen to outside the contest of a full album listen.

Also the bass in Contact is straight evil and I love that

I agree with you, "Reggatta De Blanc" stands the test of time as one of the greatest albums of the post-punk and new wave era. And I also make my own the words of Sabrutin. This is a truly classic album. Almost all the songs are classic. Even myself, a truly prog fan and very critical with the the punk movement in end of the 70's love this album because it represents one of the best things in music that appears as a brilliant consequence of those times. Pos.

As you can see Sabrutin, this is another band not rated yet by me.

''Does Everyone Stare'' is like the only weak song here. This is on par with Zenyatta as my favorite albums. I still have te relisten to Synchronicity to try to determine a winner.

I think for what it means, "Reggatta De Blanc" is my favourite. However, their discography is all great and I have many doubts about my second choice. I think Zenyatta, Ghost and Synchronicity are all at the same level. Anyway, I don't listen to Police for a long time. I need to check them again. I think their debut is the weakest of all their albums.

Sabrutin: Thanks! I'm just starting out but plan on doing many more reviews, it's actually pretty fun. Reggatta de Blanc is probably my favourite Police album, either it or Zenyatta Mondatta (which I will review next.) But each Police album seems to have at least one or two tracks I can't fully get behind, so it is very hard to determine which I think is truly the best. I would say that Reggatta is better overall but Zenyatta has some of my favourite Police tracks, but the last third of that album is pretty weak comparatively.

And yes, the bass on Contact is nasty, and must always be played at maximum volume lol

And what about ''Shadows in the Rain'', tomahawk? Song rules.

@e21, I agree about the first Police album being the weakest. I still have to listen to Ghost which has its load of catchy songs indeed. I particularly enjoy One World (Not Three), I can't wait to relisten to it.

As for Synchronicity, it's nearly perfect. It's second half has only radio friendly tracks that sounds pretty much like some Sting's solo stuff. It has its charms but I prefer Regatta and Zenyatta all the same.

To be honest I find "Shadows in the Rain" to be pretty long winded. It's got a pretty cool groove but the song is about twice as long as it should be in my view.

Synchronicity is the one I've listened to the least of the five. It's got a much more mainstream 80's laid back electronic feel that I'm just not that into. I've heard "Every Breath You Take" too many times so I kind of hate it now, and I don't know what the hell is going on with "Mother." But like every Police album it has some gems and some skippable songs. It's what makes them an interesting band.

Another nice review--I always go back and forth between this and Synchronicity as my favorite Police album. This one seems to have aged better to me.
