Review Summary: "I wrote this one for you/Cause that's all I could do/It's sad, but it's all true/So I guess it'll have to do"

It's hard to write a review for a Joyce Manor album when all their records barely break the 20 minute mark, giving little time to form an extensive opinion on each song. What I will say about Cody is that it is Joyce Manor's most fully realized piece of work they have ever come out with. While albums like Never Hungover Again felt more like a sampler plate of what Joyce Manor is capable of, Cody shows more of a focus and mastery of their particular style of music.

One thing I noticed about Cody is how nostalgic it sounds. Each song still contains the special Joyce Manor brand of catchiness, the riffs and song structures are reminiscent of power pop anthems of the 90s. The lead single "Fake ID" is where this is apparent the most, with the main riff sounding like something that would've been on rock radio of the past. This is in no way a bad thing. This style of song writing along with surprisingly mature lyrics for Joyce Manor makes Cody the most grown up sounding the band has ever been.

Highlights of the album include "Last You Heard Of Me" and "Make Me Dumb", both including really catchy melodies while also managing to sound somber and mature. "Do You Really Want To Not Get Better?" is a slow and somber acoustic song (which is rarely traveled territory for Joyce Manor) that most accurately shows what I mean when I say that Cody shows a more mature side of Joyce Manor. That's not to say the rest of the album is slow. "Fake ID" and "Reversing Machine" are both the fast and catchy sounding pop punk Joyce Manor is known for.

Joyce Manor has managed to craft their most accessible record while making it one of the most mature things the band has ever put out. At only 24 minutes long, Cody's catchy lyrics and melodies will leave you wanting more Joyce Manor than ever before.

pos'd the review, but this album sadly wasn't cutting it. Very somber in comparison to their pervious work but really lacked energy and enthusiasm. something that made this band really engaging and enjoyable to listen to. it's still good, but by comparison, just not doing it for me.

Why do 99% of Sput reviews put a lyric quote as the Review Summary? C'mon people, we're better than that

I'm loving Over Before It Began, Reversing Machine, and Angel In The Snow. I guess I wish the closer was a bit more of a standout. I get that it's a cute addition to the overall theme, but it still leaves me unsatisfied in a way that I don't really like for such a fun album.

If the lyric is a good representative of the overall album, I don't see the issue.

yeah totally agree Infamous those are the best. Eighteen gives me insane feels

@futures depends...when I use lyrics in my summary that usually hints at the theme/overall meaning of the review itself. if it's just thrown in there without any explanation/reason then I could see it being considered lazy
