Review Summary: A good solid debut album from a band who could develop into something unusual.

In the same way that The Arcana's first single Ghostwriter has all the ingredients of a classic song that will be remembered for as long as anyone can still remember rock and roll, Tomorrow is Yesterday could do for them what Paranoid did for Black Sabbath - that is propel them into the spotlight. However, if fans think that they're going to get a set of classic songs that pigeonhole them in one style or genre they are sadly mistaken. The fact is that any one song on the album will probably be liked by almost anyone. In other words, if you're into Santana or Hendrix or RHCP or Beatles or Monkees or Oasis or Cream or Dandy Warhols or... there will be at least one (probably more) song that will do it for you. It's difficult to tell whether this was deliberately done or just how the band write their songs. If you're a Sabbath fan you probably won't like any! Though I could be mistaken. It's not clear who produced the album, but whoever it was certainly took a risk with the track compliment. Of course this could very well pay off.

There's a great deal of guitar driven melodies; so there is that retro feel with tracks like Ghostwriter and Despair. There is also some funky guitar reminiscent of some of the Peppers' tracks of their halcyon days - Aeroplane springs to mind. There is also a very nice use of sound effects particularly on guitars and bass which also adds to diversity of the tracks. The vocals also change according to the style of track so there might be some effects on these as well. One thing is evident: more than one producer was involved. Tracks like Tomorrow is Yesterday sound more complicated in structure compared with, say, Looking Out For You, which is real three-piece stuff.

I wouldn't say it's my favourite album, but it is a surprisingly subtle album which ebbs and flows in the wake of many different styles - which is pretty interesting.
