Review Summary: Ambient vignettes for overwrought minds.

I guess this album is supposed to be nostalgic but it mostly reminds me of things that I can't really sequester to one specific point in time. Crawling through drainage tunnels at night. Watching raindrops collect on a window beyond which vast fields are scattered with sunlight and shadow. Mostly, these are moments of childish excitement and, at the same time, peace. I'm no aficionado of ambient music, but I value it most when it just lets me sit back and ponder life and enjoy a little peace.

However, this album is more than just background music to my own nostalgic recollections. The titles seem pretty intentional and often provide a clear framework for what sort of image or feeling each song is trying to communicate. The very first song for instance: "Zen Den" is a poetically precise title, and matches well with the warm synths and meandering rhythm to convey a dark and comforting place of exuberant solitude.

Ultimately my experience of this album may be mostly a construct of my own imagination, but I'm sure these little songs have served as guides. One thing that helped create room for my imagination to wander was the relative lack of outside sounds and field-recordings on this album. Blithe Field often incorporates chopped up and pitch-shifted vocal recordings, and while I usually enjoy those little intrusions, Face Always Towards the Sun is mostly empty of them. This makes it easier for the listener to focus on the imagery the music itself creates, without having to worry about human voices and the narratives their words often impose.

Anyway, give this album a listen; maybe you'll find it as refreshing as I have.

I was hoping to write a more substantive review of this but I guess this was as substantive as the music would allow for. Feedback is greatly desired and appreciated.

Glad to see this get some attention as this is easily one of my favorites releases this year.

As for the review i think you use a bit too much of your imagination to describe things and the comparisons to Ricky Eat Acid aren't warranted either, If someone has never heard of that artist they are gonna be left clueless as to what this sounds like.

"Everything is calmer when you don't have to worry about some random vocal sample cutting in and out or a voicemail from some person you don't particularly care about capturing your attention."

I feel like that line is very unnecessary and subjective, In my opinion just because something has vocals samples or a voicemail doesn't necessarily make it calmer. Even though this album doesn't have incorporate those elements there is still moments where it feels loud and chaotic.

Those are just some of my constructive criticisms though, you should definitely keep writing, overall you just need to work on describing the sound a little better.

Yeah, I getcha. Honestly every time I write a review it comes out frustratingly ambiguous and imprecise. I kinda just felt like giving it another shot because I love this album a lot but I think I'm probably done with writing music reviews. It's not the most productive way for me to spend my time.

Don't beat yourself up. Tbh ambient can be hard to describe without trying to pull visuals from your own imagination into it. I just checked your review for Portraits of Past and it was excellent. I mean honestly I too feel like i have more productive ways to spend my time than reviewing but it doesn't stop me from trying to review something i really love that needs one.

This album really is amazing though. I love the cohesiveness and flow of it, sometimes i have to stop and ask myself "wow how did the music even end up here" because at times it almost feels like one long song.

I agree with GmemberKills. This isn't a bad review by any means though, it could just use a bit more. One thing I saw was:

"The titles seem pretty intentional and often provide a clear framework for what sort of image or feeling each song is trying to communicate. The very first song for instance, "Zen Den," doesn't really create a specific image so much as open things up for the listener to construct his or her own"

This reads as a contradiction to me because the first sentence says that the titles provide a clear framework for the image and feeling, but you follow up with an example that doesn't create a specific image. The "for instance" kind of throws it off in my opinion because they seem like two separate ideas. That's all I see though.

Haha, I'm here. Thanks for the comments, maybe I'll try to rework it a little.

I guess there I was trying to say the songs often provide a framework/direction for images without being super restrictive or concrete about it.

Also, Gmemberkills, I guess I meant "purer" rather than "calmer." But for me there's something relatively jarring or intrusive about those vocal samples and even the beats that blithe field has used on previous releases, especially when they're juxtaposed with placid ambient music. So that's where I was headed with that.

There are definitely some jarring moments though. I think I'll give the album a couple more listens and then try to clarify some stuff.

word. It's been the soundtrack to my life over the past few months

i swear the fact that this has no real beats or voice samples just makes this so timeless, never gets old to me

wish more people felt the same way about this

Just edited the review a bit, I think I said what I was trying to say more clearly, but it's still really short.
