Review Summary: "So we fixed you with cement galoshes, so no one can save you now, unless you have friends among fish. There'll still be no air to breathe."

I once hated it. So much. It wasn't Deja and It wasn't YFW. It wasn't the Brand New I loved. I felt robbed, betrayed by a band that I love, but I kept giving it chance after chance. Then one day. It clicked, I just needed to give it time, and now it's one of my favorites. The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me, asks questions of morality and the spiritual battle of your own soul. Jesse sounds so tourremented as he screams and sings his heart out. The band comes together with expertly crafted instrumentals, very different from the ones on Deja, but more angry and dark than ever before. As Jesse screams "You Won't Know" the guitar explodes with the drums and the bass follows. It's an excellent example of the new change in direction. Even Jesse's lyrics have gotten darker "Your never gonna feel as full as ya felt so let's go outside and play william tell." Jesse questions everything he does, nothing he does is ever good enough, he's lost his faith in god and he's lost faith in himself. Jesse never let's up on the listener bumbarding them with darkness after darkness, his inner most personal thoughts and wants, nowhere else is Jesse's lyrical prouise more prominantly displayed than on the massive "Limosine" which has him detailing the story of a seven year old girl who was killed in a drunk driving accident. Saying such things as "I can dish it out but I can't take it" Most likely refering to the drunk drivers willingness to both drink and drive but not accept the consequences for what follows. Jesse continues his path towards darkness in the song "Luca" one of the most unforgivably eirie songs on the album as it lulls you into a false sense of security and then explodes in your face.
Their are some more bisare moments. Such as "Untitled" and "Welcome to Bangkok" both great tracks in their own right but very odd nontheless. All in all I'd say The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me is a masterful piece of art, and I for one am glad that I grew to love this album as much as I do.

Although Daisy is both lyrically and musically different from The Devil and God are raging inside me, It's still very obvious this Is Brand New, well that is until you hear the opening track Vices.
