Review Summary: Mac Demarco gives solid, laid-back album with Another One
Listen to the twangy guitar at the end of “I’ve Been Waiting for Her” and you’ll see why I adore listening to Mac Demarco. First introduced to me by a friend back in high school, Demarco has always provided excellent laid-back melodies perfect for lazy days. And his short collection of love songs on
Another One is a wonderful showcase of what fans of the singer-songwriter have always loved about him.
Standing at only a little under 24 minutes,
Another One has plenty of hazy and somber tempos and Demarco is amazing in how he manages to convey hurt and loss in his vocals. Check the title track “Another One,” where he worries a love of his has affections for someone else, and you’ll find a smooth, melancholic atmosphere along with touching lyrics.
The melting synths and piano keys on the album always provide something new to be amazed at in the intricate workings of Demarco’s music. Almost all the cuts off the album are pretty short, most running under three minutes, making you wish they lasted forever. If not, than just a few seconds more. This is especially true on the aforementioned “Another One,” “Just to Put Me Down,” “I’ve Been Waiting for Her,” and “Without Me.”
