I've been a huge Slipknot fan (maggot) for ages and when this album hit the stands, I bought it before hearing any of the songs. I put all my faith and 30 bucks into this album and it bloody paid off!
1. Prelude 3.0 (5/5)
This is a different sort of song to other Slipknot songs. It is more mellow and because of the name, I expected it to be an intro. But this song is a full blown, 4 minute masterpiece! Packed with great guitar, solo like work, heavy riffs and beautiful soft vocals by Corey. That is until the end where he starts screaming which finishs the song brilliantly.
2. The Blister Exists (4.5/5)
Another great track by Slipknot comes in early. This is more of a classic Slipknot song which reminds alot of Iowa. joeys drums show off on this track as do Micks ability to shred the guitar without going overboard. The lyrics are meaningful by Corey and are executed well. The peak in this song is the drum solo by Joey, Shawn and Paul.
3. Three Nil (4.5/5)
This is a similar track to The Blister Exists. The best parts of this song are the bridge and the chorus. The chorus includes great guitar and clean vocals. the guitar and drums are excellent in this song and sure continue Slipknots reign of brilliamce!
4. Duality (5/5)
The first single of Vol. 3 and I know why! This song has Corey best vocals ever. the guitar is great with melodic riffs and pinch harmonics. The drums are also spectacular and the best part of this song is probably the chorus. The verses are great with Corey almost rapping and fast, palm muted guitar riffs by Jim and Mick. Great song.
5. Opium of the People (5/5)
This song is an epic in it self. It starts off with heavy guitar and little soloing by Mick and Jim. it is followed by a scream by Corey which opens the song into a riff similiar to Enter Sandman by Metallica. It has chunky little riffs in the verse and the Chorus tops it all off. Listen and see for yourself, I highly recommend it.
6. Circle (5/5)
Slipknot's first acoustic song ever. The lyrics are a poem that will bring a tear to your eye if you understand it. The guitar is great for the song and the drum solo ending is great.
7. Welcome (4/5)
Welcome is an awsome song but on this album, it isn't so great. It is usually a song I skip merely because I want to hear the next track. There is a good solo worth noticing in this song and great guitar and vocals. Similiar to Pulse of the Maggots.
8. Vermilion (5/5)
This is by far the best song I've ever heard by Slipknot. The first time I read the lyrics while listening to the song, I literally cried. It is so emotional and great. And even if you're not into lyrics, the music is probably the best aswell. The guitar keeps you satisfied with fantastic riffs and a brilliant solo. The drums have their moments and even the sampling by Craig will have you on the edge of your seat. If you don't have this song, you should be ashamed!
9. Pulse of the Maggots (4/5)
This was probably the most talked about song I'd heard off this album but it's not better than any of the other tracks. Sure, there's a great solo and good chants but the song lacks emotion. I thrive for emotion and Corey delivers it well but not on this song. I still love moshing to it though!
10. Before I Forget (5/5)
Another brilliant song from Slipknot. probably the second best song on the album. Excellent guitar and vocals/lyrics but the drums are the best here. the bridge is the peak in this song and it's a song that's sure to be repeated a few times.
11. Vermilion, Pt. 2 (5/5)
Vermilion, my favourite track, gone acousitic? This takes the emotion from Vermilion to a whole new level. I'm a metalhead so I preferred the first one but this still is a great track. Lyrics are practically the same and the guitar is pretty much just on acoustic guitars.
12. The Nameless (5/5)
The guitar riffs in this are awsome and the singing is good. The acoustic parts make it more emotional especially when they take that part and make it heavy in the last minute of the song, an all round brilliant track.
13. The Virus Of Life (3.5/5)
I fail to see the point to this song. it almost ruins the cd by putting in a techno-ish song. I respect it though because of the lyrics and because thats what Craig and Sid like.
14. Danger - Keep Away (5/5)
This song is brilliant. It's not rock but it takes the emotion of the album and finishes it in a perfect way. After you listen to the whole album including this song, you'll feel complete. The vocals are great and the keyboard does it's part here.
There you have it. This is by far one of my favourite cds and I hope it's inspired you to look into this album.
Peace.
