Review Summary: Stop showing off like you're something special and start backing up your meaningless trash talk with a little walk. Is that enough for your brain's already small capacity?
Yeah, I like many, have come to find that it's pretty much impossible to take Attila seriously. We all know about them. They're this in your face deathcore suit from Atlanta, GA. They've got a fan base who consists 99.99% of ignorant teenagers who love the idea of being rebellious. They've got arguably the most arrogant and close minded individual you can imagine in lead singer Chris Fronzak.
You're also probably familiar with their music. Instrumentally, you're looking at 10+ tracks of standard guitar riffs being chugged for some sort of effect. You've got the double base pedal to keep the track going. And then of course, you've got the lyrics. Chris Fronzak's "suck my f**k" catchphrase has made its way on to merchandise everywhere and the phrase leaves his mouth pretty much every time he leaves his house. The f bomb and other curse words are thrown in there to make you believe these guys are cool. Well, put it this way, ladies and gentlemen. The first time I heard Fronz's voice and lyrical content, I asked myself if I was listening to a 13-year old boy.
Honestly, do you think these guys are making quality music. Granted, their instrumentalists have a little bit to offer in their repertoire. But they're already saddled with the same generic label that plagues other deathcore groups. I know, Fronz doesn't care who criticizes his work. I know Fronz is probably partying his skinny jean wearing butt off as we speak. But take a second to really grasp what I'm saying here. The majority of the tracks on this album ("Hate Me", "Proving Grounds", "Rebel", "Pizza, Sex & Trolls") are all the same. It's Fronz screaming and rapping concurrently as he tells us all how much he doesn't care. Well, if he didn't care, wouldn't he just say it once and call it a day? No. Instead, he rehashes his grandiose philosophy like a dead horse, until the listener is black and blue in the face. Honestly, the way I see it, Fronz is just proving he cares way too much.
Then again, you can't really blame him. We live in a generation where scene kids are petrified at the idea of getting advice or criticism from another. It's cool and trendy to just say "I don't care" or "I don't give a f***" or "F*** you, you can't change me." It's bad enough the lyrical content is reminiscent of a 12-year old, but throw in lackluster instrumentation, lyrics that look like they were written in 10 minutes (not even) and you've got what is quickly turning into a disgrace on behalf of other bands in this genre/sub-genre.
I do realize I've been on quite the tangent with Fronz here, but I'd be lying if I said his God-awful lyricism and arrogant attitude didn't take away from the overall experience. The instrumentalists, as mentioned, are lackluster. But even so, they've got some musicality that still comes through. But, even on a good day, their chugging guitar riffs and bass pedal abusing blend can't save this album for any dignity it could have possibly garnered for itself.
Want to throw salt in the wounds? Look at the scene kids who idolize Attila and have the immature audacity to throw this group in the same sentence as Megadeth, Metallica and Pantera. Yes, you read those horrid words correctly. there are people who actually believe this group is in the same category as the heavy metal pioneers I just listed.
I'm not even going to go on from here. If you want to get the full effect of my rants, listen to the actual album. Grab your ear plugs while you're at it.
