Review Summary: San Cisco, found on a night out in the Uk
So, it is the height of summer. A friend and i are sitting in a pub garden. The weather is magnificent, the sun just beginning to set and we are discussing football. My friend begins to enter into a long monotone, moaning, rant about the game we both love I should be listening intensely, but i am distracted by a song that i cannot hear properly. I interrupt my friend and apologise for doing so. 'What do you think of this song' i ask. 'I have not really been listening' he replies. 'I really like it and i need to find out who it is before it finishes' i state. Off i trundle, into the pub and up to dukebox. A young lad (younger than me by nearly 20 years) is stood there by the dukebox. I blurt out, 'did you put this on?' 'Yes, i have just come back from Australia and this band are making waves, no-one has heard of them around here' he blusters. I reply with, 'who is this and what is this song called?' 'San Cisco and the song is called Beach'
I finish my night out with my friend, talking more football but like a fish, i have taken the San Cisco bait and am hooked. I walk home and immediately listen to everything i can find on you tube by San Cisco.
Much to my delight, San Cisco release their new album just as my addiction to their music is beginning to wane. Wow, Gracetown is miles better than their first album. I generally find most groups peak with their second album (Whats the story, morning glory, A rush of blood to the head come to mind) I sincerely hope this is not what happens with San Cisco.
Gracetown is not perfect, however it does show evidence of passing entry exams into worldwide recognition. Run, Snow and About you are superb songs. The highlight is undoubtedly 'Magic' with drummer Scarlett, taking up the vocals in a funky, almost dreamy, summer song that everyone i have played it to likes upon hearing it for the first time. Some songs, you will want to skip. I feel that San Cisco need to keep upbeat in composition as the slower songs can be a little nauseating. Jordi, the lead singer still comes across as a good frontman with a strong voice that other singers of similar ilk will envy.
San Cisco have the world at their feet but also have career defining decisions to make. This album has a bit of everything from Pop to R@B. Album number 3 will define them, i hope they choose the right path because there is so much potential in their music.
