Review Summary: Brutally beautiful, or beautifully brutal?
Widek, A one man powerhouse musical project by Polish guitarist Maciej Dawidek, who just happens to be a musical genius. And on "Outside the universe" he seems intent on showing you all the arrows on his quiver.
"outside the universe" is the first full length album by Widek, and it really doesn't disappoint. 16 tracks of pure class, spanning many genres. If you are a fan of ambient, Post-rock, Djent, Metalcore and progressive rock/metal, you are in for a treat. And although Widek dabbles in many genres and sub genres, he does it effortlessly which has been the downfall of many other artists in the past.
"the space between us" kicks things off. The opening chords welcoming in the listener. The first thing you notice, is the beautiful guitar work. The cascade of lovely sounds feeling your ears, as your mind opens up. The album is aptly titled, as it takes you to another Universe.
The rest of the album flows on effortlessly, We get to hear some ambient elements, some djent elements, and some metal elements, all by the time we have reached track 4.
Being 16 tracks long, you could forgive any listener for beginning to wain, but with everything this album has to offer, that's never really a problem. It's a wonderfully crafted piece of work, Layered and textured. There is something new for the listener to hear in every track.
It's hard to review an album like this, as it's better to just go and hear it for yourself. No words could do it justice. The Guitar work, the drumming, everything you hear on this record is just perfection. It's hard to fault it at all. If you are a fan of music, in any form it's well worth listening to. I only gave it 4.5, as I found his latest album "journey to the stars", to be an even better album.
In short, it's beautiful, It's brutal. It's the sort of album you can stick on and completely lose yourself in. And why not? It is clearly the intent of Widek to take you on the musical journey of your life.
