Review Summary: Harvey Milk is definitely one of the most under appreciated bands of all time. My Love is their crowning achievement.
Harvey Milk is a band that many may have a hard time getting into. They are dirty, extremely heavy, use odd time signatures and song structures, and will simply crush your ears with heavy metal experimentation. Don't give up on it right away however, because once this grows on you it will stick with you. This is more of an experience, and cannot be listened to as background music.
My Love Is Higher Than Your Assessment of What My Love Could Be is the debut from Athens, Georgia's finest, Harvey Milk. The album was released in 1994, and is to this day one of the heaviest, thickest, sludgiest, and most experimental records ever made. If you want soul grinding music that will take your breath away and leave you with a feeling of sorrow, this is for you! This album will get you thinking about life, and all the crap we take every day. This album is simply an emotional roller coaster, and is engaging from start to finish.
If you are tired of radio rock and generic hip hop/pop that plague our society, give this album a spin. Spin it multiple times, as music like this is not easily taken in from a single listen. This takes several listens to really work, and there is a lot to catch each time. Best tracks are the crushing sludge of Women Dig It, the experimental and possible United States National Anthem candidate The Anvil Will Fall, the fantastic riffs of Merlin is Magic, the 10 minute magnum opus of My Father's Life Work (one of my favorite songs of all time), and one of the thickest pieces of sludge mayhem around, Jim's Polish.
From front to back this album is truly unique, and demands your full attention for the entire 66 minute duration. If you want to truly experience what music can really bring to your mind and soul, get this album and spend some quality time digesting it. You may never judge music the same way again, as everything else may feel bland in comparison.
Note: The album is best experienced with a nice pair of headphones. Some of the songs feature quiet passages, which are best and most easily heard with headphones. Just don't turn the volume up too high during these quiet parts, or your ears will be destroyed when the heavy explosion comes in.
