Review Summary: Jim? No! Ella! We've all heard how Opeth once decided to ditch the heavy ass guitars, freakish screams, and speedy, blasting drumming for a much softer and rather intimate record, so I won't spend time going over that. Instead, I'd like to spend time focusing on this album by itself. Hopefully, beyond the cover of obnoxious hype and history, we can explore this album more objectively. After all, to review a single record through the sole process of comparing it with other records seems a little ridiculous, doesn't it?
To begin, Opeth mainly utilized instruments that, frankly, are usually a complete hit-or-miss in terms of cohesiveness. The clean guitars work decently enough for the atmosphere but do very little to hold the listener's attention, and many times are the center focus when Mikael Åkerfeldt isn't singing. To be honest, the chord progressions (if there are any, because at times they are just three chord patterns) are extremely simple and resemble almost slow pop. Similarly, the drums provide a decent enough backbone for the rhythm, but they really don't do much justice in keeping you awake. The third main piece of the music are very unsettling organs that don't work well at all with the calming atmosphere. Finally, Åkerfeldt tends to over sing things quite often. "In My Time of Need" in particular has rather annoying vocal work, with Åkerfeldt phasing in and out with short bursts of words. At the risk of comparing with an outside source, it's almost like they tried for a quiet Doors atmosphere but ended up with Lorde on heroin.
The structure of the album as a whole is odd: the songs work okay separately but together they form an awkward chain of stiff rhythms. Nothing here an be considered organic. The songs themselves are overlong which does nothing but add to the bore factor. The lyrics don't mess well with odd transitions between themes throughout the album, which really isn't a big deal considering Åkerfeldt's voice is too distracting.

The album is perfect when you're in the mood for it, but I can understand how if you're not specifically looking for this type of atmosphere it could come across as a bit dull. "Windowpane" rules regardless, though.

windowpane is one of the best opeth songs, everything else here ranges from pretty good to blegh.

For the review, that middle paragraph seriously needs to be fleshed out. Take any major points you have and divide them into paragraphs where you can specifically back up what you said with instances from the album. A simple list of reasons like that middle paragraph won't cut it. Also you need a better conclusion, that last sentence has no sense of finality at all. Try and avoid that casual tone you keep in the first paragraph, instead keep it professional.

No problem, also just keep in mind that the more a review is based around a singular (and interesting) thesis that the writer has set up, the better.

I agree with a lot of this, definitely overrated. Though I love the first few songs, especially Windowpane.
If you accidentally hit submit, just go back and edit it and add the rest to the review. Sputnik lets you edit reviews as much as you want for as long as you want after being posted

But you did spend time going over it.
If you make the opening paragraph more focused and justify your opinions in more detail you could end up with a decent review from this.
