Review Summary: Eugh

Thirty Seconds to Mars are one of those bands that start out strong, but with every release get worse. Their debut album, 30 Seconds to Mars was a fantastic space-rock gem, with catchy hooks, and lyrics exploring the Human experience alluding it to astronomy. Their second and third albums were mainstream, unoriginal, run-of-the-mill rock albums, so similar to Muse it was untrue. They weren't terrible, but they were far from fantastic. Their latest effort is appalling. Filled to the brim with buzzing electronic pop, fuzzy poorly delivered vocals, and terrible sampling, Love Lust Faith + Dreams truly kicks the bucket for TSTM.

The album opens with 'Birth', which acts as an album 'intro', that fades into the first full song, 'Conquistador', which is so similar to Muse's 'Uprising', it may as well be the same track. Both these opening tracks, are as generic and poppy as can be possible. The guitars are so heavily distorted with synths, it is almost impossible to distinguish them. Jared's singing is a straight up cut out of Matthew Bellamy's of Muse, only these too have been distorted with synths, making him sound as though he recorded these vocals with a very bad runny nose. The next track, and lead single, 'Up in the Air', is admittedly very catchy. It's a straight up dance/pop number, suffering from the same problems as the previous two tracks, but at the same time, you'll find yourself singing it to yourself for weeks on end after listening to it.

Ultimately, the remainder of the tracks all suffer the same fate. Heavy synths, distorted vocals and poor sampling. The drums may as well have been recorded using a casio keyboard on the drum kit setting, that said, the percussion does as it is expected, it keeps the rhythm going and gives a pulse to the otherwise lifeless album. Jareds vocal work throughout is the same in every song, heavily distorted, and suddenly going from low to high pitched screams.

This album is a poor effort from a band that started out so strongly, abandoning original and insightful lyrics for teen angst and heartbreak, and leaving their space-rock roots to rot. With hope, they will realise the monsterous band they have become and return to their roots with their next effort.

Not a great review if I'm honest, man. It doesn't really explain a whole lot other than it rattles on about synths and Muse. lol

Though I do agree with you on most points you made. They need to go back to the drawing board.

Hehe, yeah I'm not too proud of it, bear in mind I wrote it whilst I was really ill, I'm planning on expanding it later. Thanks for the feedback though! :D

Being honest, I don't think I could write more about this album... there isn't really that much to
say.

I've never been into this band, but "The Kill" was a nice track when I was younger. Sadly, I knew I
couldn't like this as soon as I heard "Up In The Air".

Thats true, its a very bland album. Up in the Air is without a doubt a bad track, but when compared with the rest on this album, its a pearl in a pool of shite. Love the Profile Pic Sabrutin btw, H R Giger is one of my favourite artists

Yeah, he creates some very interesting pieces of art! This one is what attracted me to Celtic Frost.

I honestly hate how the drumming is the same pattern used in every song, that is just a bit different every now and then... There went no effort from Shannon into this album at all.

I think I only enjoyed The Kill from them, and a few songs off of that Brave New World or whatever its called.

This album is a joke though.

Hey dude welcome! First of all you are very new to reviewing so this isn't that bad for a third. However, some tips:

I made this same mistake in my rev for this back in the day: Try not to compare this to another band so much. Most of the basis of this is saying how this is a lesser version of Muse as well as the band's other works. It's fine to do in small doses but not as the foundation for the review.

Also, your third paragraph comes off as lazy because you mention two tracks but basically say that the first fellows the same trend, describe some of these tracks. Are there small highlights? For example one for me is City of Angels.

Anyway, do with that what you will I also agree with your first couple of statements, their s/t is incredible.

There are a few grammer errors in the review. The review itself, however, does bring up some good points.

Saw them last year at Download Fest, one of the worst things I've ever seen in my life. Was hardly surprising they got booed off the stage in favour of Rammstein. Exactly what they were doing at DL in the first place is what I'm wondering.

Well in addition Leto is such a cock, he stopped their set TWICE because the crowd wasn't cheering loud enough. I was really only watching the, so I wouldn't lose my spot I had for Rammstein. During their last song people tried to drown the band out by singing "Du Hast"

There was a Rammstein show following, no need to wonder why people wanted that more than 30 Seconds To Mars.

"During their last song people tried to drown the band out by singing "Du Hast""

Oh and the band threw animal floaties into the crowd. It's almost as if they knew they were the most ridiculous band ever.

My sister went to one of their shows a few years back, she said it was an amazing show. They even stopped the show and brought a girl who had a nose bleed from the mosh pit (Lol you can mosh to 30 seconds) and let everyone know how awesome and badass she was before sending her on her way.
