Review Summary: Excellent DSBM

Lamuria Abissal could easily be mistaken for some cheap knockoff band but damn, this is one of the finest DSBM albums I’ve heard in a while, while staying true to the real intent. Yes there are the more evocative ones like say Austere or Woods of Desolation, the more pleasant kinds, but this is in the vein of Silencer and the likes, truly depressive and suicidal and to that extent it does that hysterical screaming and wailing and although initially it seemed jarring and disturbing, on the whole it’s rather well done, remarkable in fact.
It was in the second song that the band really started to shine – its penchant for playing some really touching riffs is clearly audible, and palpable. It’s simply a brilliant song that has layers to it, and one that sticks to memory. Another similar one is the closer ...De uma Profunda… which is the DSBM version of Dunkelheit almost. It’s magnificent and again one that you can’t tire of – tunes like these remain immortal and haunt you for eons. The lead playing accentuates the depression like no other, it’s simply like a different, crying voice, subdued but truly heart-rending at times. The songs between these masterpieces are reminiscent of the morose and despair-ridden atmosphere composed by the likes of Moloch, especially the ambient sections. There’s always this terribly sadistic and hollow sounding feel, as if representing an empty life, one that you truly dread to spend more time in.
Repeated listens make it clear that this is a special album, the artists. It’s like Silencer of this decade. It’s on the verge of emotionally breaking down and the feelings are well-captured in audio, despite the hysteria and histrionics. It’s partially demented too, with the cover art depicting what looks like a real-life haunting and the inlay artworks showing a mental asylum. Life can do that to you sometimes but what it can also do is have a bunch of really talented people create an art form, this album, rife with genuine melodies and intent. Well done. It took me a while but it was an experience that will remain unforgotten.
