Band: Bad Religion
Album: The Empire Strikes First
Label: Epitaph
Genre: Punk

I will start by saying if you don't know who Bad Religion is you should be shot. In my opion they are the greatest punk band ever. Just the fact that the band is 24 years old and they are headlining the warped tour and are still coming out with music should say something to you. Also I don't think that these guys are about to retire any time soon. Anyway back to the album.

1. Overture 5/10
This is just the intro to the album but it does have some cool sounds.

2. Sinister Rouge 9/10
This is my third favorite song on the album. It is a great way to open the album. Very fast, short and it has a very catchy chorus. If there is song that os going to get stuck in your head from this album this would be it.

3. Social Suicide 8/10
Again this song is another great way to open the album. Very short with great drums and guitars. This song also shows off Greg Graffins voice like no other.

4. Atheist Peace 8/10
The lyrics in this song are not really my type but thats just cause i'm a christian so I wouldn't know what "atheist peace" is. This song does have some good guitar work though.

5. All There Is 9/10
This song has very cool background vocals. One of the things I like most about BR is that there songs sound really complicated but really it isn't. This is a great example of that.

6. Los Angeles Is Burning 10/10
I think this is the best song on the album. This song has more of a rock feel then a punk feel but it is still great. I think this has all the makings to me a smash single but it actually is still a great song. For some reason whenever I hear this song it reminds me of another BR 21st Century Digital Boy but I don't know why. Maybe they song alike but I don't think so.

7. Let Them Eat War 10/10
This is my second favorite song right behind "LA is Burning." The lyrics in this song really get to me. If i'm right this song is about how we are spending all our money on the war instead of helping the homeless. This song would be the best song on the album but it ruins it when some guy comes in the middle of the song AND STARTS RAPPING! That's right there is RAP on a BR cd. CRAZY!

8. God's Love 7/10
Again in this song i'm not even going to touch the lyrics. Not much to say. OK song.

9. To Another Abyss 7/10
This song really slows down the album. I don't know why they have to put songs like this in. Almost like a punk rock ballad. But since they did do it, it is a good song.

10. The Quickening 8/10
Nice way to speed up the album after the "ballad" in "To Another Abyss" Has a really cool intro guitar riff and some pretty cool lyrics. Also has some awsome backup lyrics.

11. The Empire Strikes First 8/10
This is another "rock" song on the album. Although the chorus sounds like some sort of football cheer the rest of the song is good and the guitar work in this song is brillant, bloody brillant!

12. Beyond Electric Dreams 9/10
The vocals in this song are really good. I would say something about the lyrics but I have no idea what this song is about! Again the guitar has some pretty cool riffs all throughout this song. This is the song that reminds me most of old school BR. Can someone please tell me what this song is about!?

13. Boot Stamping On A Human Face Forever 9/10
This is the other song that is like a punk ballad but I think this song is way better then "To Another Abyss" Great vocals but I don't know what the lyrics mean. Again could someone tell me what this song is about!?

14. Live Again-The Fall Of Man 9/10
This is a great way to close out "The Empire Strikes First" Cool drums. Cool guitar. Really cool vocals. I think this song has a really good message but i'm probably understanding the lyrics wrong. Again great song to close out a great album.

As a whole I would give "The Empire Strikes Back" a 9/10. If you are just getting into BR I wouldn't get this, I would buy either "Against The Grain" or "Suffer" which contains the single greatest BR song ever "Do What You Want!" Any way if you are a BR fan I would get this right now! I said now! Why are you not going? LEAVE!

I don't see the point of being a Bad Religion fan and a Christian. Seriously.

You give this CD way to much credit.

For a modern punk album, it's about a B+. For a Bad Religion album it's like a C-.

Yeah, not point in being christian and a BR fan. This album can be pretty good if we take the time to apreciate it, you need to listen ot it more closely and you'll discover a very great album. maybe not worth 9/10, but at least 8.

I actually like this album, unlike these bumbling idiots.
Yeah, not point in being christian and a BR fan.
I am, so shh. Most of their views aren't even anti-religious, they're speaking against the Church and it's own views.

you can be a BR fan and be christian becuase besides their message and lyrics, they have great sounding music, just you dont get the full expirience. Anyways, this album wasnt too good, like true till death said, b+ for modern punk band and a c- for BR, this is definatly not their best album.

I don't see how you can listen to Bad Religion, and be a Christian. You're basically just wasting your time then.

I'll have to disagree with most of the peeps here... Empire is unquestionably one of BR's most solid albums... just about every song on here is great. A few tracks are a little uninspired, but the mix of slow/fast songs along with more experimental tracks like Boot Stamping show that BR is more than cut-time and five chords... but Sinister Rouge, All There Is, Atheist Peace, Let Them Eat War, and LA Is Burning make this a great album alone IMO.

how dare all of you. this is definately one of bad religions better albums (that i have... and btw i've got against the grain, all ages, generator, how could hell be any worse, no control, receipe for hate, suffer, the empire strikes first, the new america, and the process of belief) now yes bad religion has changed alot in the 24 or however many years they've been around but they're still good. i love this album, and btw...

you can listen to bad religion if you're christian... anyone who disagrees is probably just a "hardcore" 12 year old self=righteous jackass

Bad Religion is undeniably an extremely melodic band. They almost single-handedly gave NOFX, Lagwagon, No Use, Pennywise, Offspring, and just about every other SoCal POP-punk band their jobs when they put out Suffer - said bands who in turn influenced most of the pop-punk of today like blink-182, NFG, Green Day, Simple Plan, Good Charlotte, Yellowcard, i.e., some of the hottest POP acts of the last couple years. One of BR's biggest influences are The Beach Boys, who are, if I'm not mistaken, probably the ultimate example of a POP BAND. Hell, Greg Graffin himself has often described BR's music as folk music. Yeah, chew on that for a minute.

I have no tolerance for punk, i think its degrading and excessively boring. These guys however id have to say are Punk Kings (along with Blink182 which i dont mind occasionally).they have got some nice records for whats its worth.

Degrading? Can that make any less sense?

If you want to hear GOOD punk, listen to BR, Propagandhi, Strung Out, NOFX, A Wilhelm Scream, Dead Kennedys, No Use For A Name, Lagwagon, etc.

Uh...did he just call Blink 182 "punk kings", or am I reading something wrong?

This dude has already proven himself an idiot before, in the Green Day Warning thread. Ignorance is bliss, I suppose. As far as I'm concerned, his opinion is a debased currency.
