Review Summary: Absolutely beautiful. I used to absolutely hate folk, or anything with acoustic guitar. Several years ago my music tastes manly consisted of two things, electric guitar, and screaming. if it had anything other than that it was crappy, sappy, and stupid. I didn't think that would ever change, I was completely satisfied with korn and pantera, I thought they were so much better than “crappy” folk music. But all of this changed one day, when I walked into the local record store I was looking for one thing, and one thing only, the new korn record. When I didn't find it I was extremely disappointed, but I had an extra 10 dollars two spend, so I just decided to pick something random, and what I picked changed my music life forever.
THE DECEMBERISTS-THE CRANE WIFE
The reason I picked it up is absolutely idiotic, I thought the cover was cool. Hey I was 10, and two midgets with goofy faces is a perfect reason two buy an album. I really didn't know what to expect, so I went home and popped it into my Walkman. And of course being me, I wasn't impressed at all, I mean were are all of the electric guitars and screaming? And why the hell are they using other instruments? Man how stupid I was.
Although I didn't enjoy it at first I was intrigued, I was intrigued by the fairy-tale like lyrics. I have never listened to an album with so much great lyricism, I thought Colin Meloy was a genius, I thought he wrote pure poetry, and I was ten. This whole album just plays out like one great novel, and that made me appreciate the music more.
The albums music is incredibly layered, it’s like a mix of folk, jethro tull, and even some Sabbath, yes Sabbath. They bring in multiple instruments, which just brings out such a dark moody atmosphere, and the keyboards bring in this kind of, oh, deep purple feel. The environment is incredibly fresh, and god the lyrics just keep things so exciting. I could talk about the lyrics all day.
The artwork is also an incredible aspect of this album; it just gives it this storybook feel which is incredible. This album changed my life it got me out of metal. Mostly because it’s one of the most exciting and ground breaking indie- folk albums ever.

Not to be rude but this is hardly a review. I just joined this site myself so, I don't feel like i should be giving you advice on
how to write a good one. I'm sure the peanut gallery will come though. Anyway welcome to sputnik. Our community
is full of bitter, sarcastic, elitist, idiots that can be your best friends one moment and your worst enemies the next. Don't
worry though we really are all harmless.
| | | Yeah dude, keep at it. Maybe read some of the staff / contributor reviews to get a feel of how they're "expected" to be written, then take it from there however you will. That's how I started off

Love this album. I also initially hated it, but it was a HUGE grower on me.
THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID

Great album but haven't listened in a long time
| | | Never actually came around to it. Maybe i'll check this sometime
Your review is pretty short and, don't take this the wrong way, not very good. Now I'm not a great writer by any means, in fact english isn't even my first language so take everything I have to say with a grain of salt, but I'll try to give you some hints:
"I was intrigued by the fairy-tale like lyrics. I have never listened to an album with so much great lyricism, I thought Colin Meloy was a genius, I thought he wrote pure poetry, and I was ten. This whole album just plays out like one great novel, and that made me appreciate the music more.

This is the only part, where you actually talk about the music. That's not enough. You need to elaborate on things like the atmosphere and the instrumentation. You said you could talk about the lyrics all day as well, yet you don't do that at all.
To further clarify, I never listened to this album, and this review should give me a description of the way this album sounds, feels and why it is good. (or in other reviews bad) Your review kinda sounds like something I would tell a friend.
"Yeah man, check out this album bro, sounds like Jethro Trull with Sabbat but with great lyrics", is not an adequate review.
I won't neg since this is your first review and sputnik is hostile enough as is.
