Review Summary: An "in your face" production with the arsenal to back it up.
“Initiate” opens Texas in July’s brutal, eleven song album of sincere musical compositions and lyricism. This self-titled album is a follow up to their 2011 release “One Reality”. Alex Good’s vocals are exciting, crisp, and stepped up from previous releases. Dual guitarists Chris Davis and Christian Royer show impressive riffs and their drive for a new sound, especially in “Bed of Nails”.
“Repressed Memories” serves as a calm, melodic interlude between Gray’s heavy, calculated drumming. For a relatively young band, this album is exceedingly mature. Songs such as “Shallow Point” and “Without a Head” have clean, positive messages for today’s youth that need to be heard. Featuring spotlight names such as Chadwick Johnson (Hundredth), Dave Stephens (We Came As Romans), and Matt Greiner (August Burns Red), this production is far from a disappointment. Although angry, it expresses real, raw lyrics that show no fabrication of the things that lurk in the minds of these five musicians. Texas in July is hungry for progression and quickly feeding that appetite.
