Review Summary: If you enjoy indie-rock then this will be right up your alley. While it doesn't provide anything new or innovative to the genre, it does contain some hidden gems that should be on every indie-rock mixtape.
Australian Indie-rockers Atlas Genius' debut album When It Was Now sees another addition to the indie rock catalog of bands that goes for miles.
The album starts with 'Electric', which sets the tone for the remainder of the album. If you like the sound of this song then keep listening, otherwise don't bother. There are two standout tracks on this album 'If So' and 'Trojans'. The former is featured on Electronic Arts video game FIFA 13 and the latter is the first single from the album. 'If So' is a catchy upbeat tune that has a chorus that will stick in your head for days, brilliant song.
The intro to 'Trojans' utilizes an acoustic guitar with a slightly distorted electronic drum beat. This song is again an upbeat tune and should feature on some television advertising in summer; another great track.
'Centred on You' sees the band slow it down and utilizes a distant delay guitar effect. This song provides the other standout track on the album. The falsetto chorus provides another interesting element to this song.
Whilst at times it feels like the tracks on this album run together, at least it is a cohesive album. The vocals are well done, the production is great but in totality this a good album, not great. However, I can see myself playing this in the background on a summers day with a beer in hand whilst turning the snags on the barbie.
