I'm not sure if this has been reviewed before...if it has been done, you can delete this. I'm still gonna give it a shot.
Jane's Addiction will always be the band that made me start listening to good music instead of crap music. If it weren't for this cd and Nothing's Shocking, I'd prolly wouldn't like half of the music I own today. This is my favorite cd by Jane's...it's just a very brave rock album that was released in an era where rock became conservative and bland. Jane's Addiction, The Pixies and a few other great alt bands like Killing Joke and The Flaming Lips have helped rock steer in the right direction before Nirvana was known beyond Seattle.
01 Stop!
A great opener...it starts with some female talking in spanish...and then Dave plays a cool funky guitar riff until Perry screams "here we go!"...and Stephen Perkins let's his prescense known with his dynamic drumwork. Perry's vocals are something you either like or hate, but this song is a great example on how enthusiastic he is. It's a great intense and catchy rock tune. 4/5
02 No Ones Leaving
One of my favs...I love that funky bass riff by Eric Avery, and in this track he shows how much he added to the band. This song really summarizes Jane's sound well. The chorus is great...and so is the guitar solo. 4.5/5
03 Ain't No Right
It starts with a really trippy intermission with Perry, Eric and Stephen playing a really trippy beat. The "fake" intro to this song is cool as hell...like the previous two songs...really catchy, fun(ky) and intense. Great drumming too. 4/5
04 Obvious
This a very interesting song...it's very melodic with cool guitar melodies and rock 'n roll styled piano work. I love that funky riff Dave plays in the chorus. Really good stuff. 4.5/5
05 Been Caught Stealing
This is a nice funky jam track...and prolly Jane's Addictions most favorite song. It's got some funny sound effects...and the solo's are great too. You can tell the band had fun recording this. 4/5
06 Three Days
This is an amazing, progressive and epic song. The bassline Eric drops is gorgeous, and Dave provides some melancholic complementary guitar work, showing he is a musician and not a guitar virtuoso. After the first real chorus, Stephen plays one of his distinct tribal beats, and Dave's guitar work is as distinct as ever. The bassline works well too as it carries on for almost the entire remainder of the song and keeps everything together. The song goes into this really long heavy-melodic arranged part for awhile before it breaks lose and Dave drops guitar solo's all over the place. Just great stuff. 5/5
07 Then She Did...
This is another long track, in my opinion not nearly as good as Three Days, but still good. The song has this really laid back feeling at first, but also a sense of unease. I love how the song breaks into the powerful chorus...from there on the dynamics of the song climb up up to a peak before the song fades out again. 4/5
08 Of Course
Jane's Addiction becomes Vishnu's Addiction here. That's right, this track is more Indian music than it is alt rock...even though this track is sorta repetitive, it's downright gorgeous too. Indian acoustic guitars, percussion, middle-eastern violins. It's great. 4.5/5
09 Classic Girl
The album ends with another typical Jane's Addiction track. Nothing much to say than that it's solid. Plus the chorus is great. Unfortunately after this cd, Jane's Addiction didn't make a song like this until "Everybody's Friend". 4/5
