Review Summary: Won't change the post-hardcore world or anything, but this album can be catchy and fun to listen if you don't expect too much
Well first my first review I choose Genesi(S) by Woe, is me.
I got introduce to this album by Alternative Press and after hearing the first single Iwas curious to hear more.
Le`t see what I thought of it after a couple of good listen.
The album start like manypost-harcore album ( if not all album if this style ) with a short introduction who add nothing to the record. It's under 40 seconds, but at least there's lyrics into. Following this song the album really start F.Y.I., the rift are very reminiscent of Periphery, but without all their technical aspect here we're talking about very simplistic guitar rifts that will remains similiar throughout the entire album. We need ot wait until A Story To Tell before really hearing the clean vocalist Hance Alligood. His vocals are kind of similiar to Jeremy Mckinnon of A Day To Remember withtout being copied. Personnally I think his voice fidts very the new direction the band. The rest of the song follow the same pattern of screaming verse with some singing choruses with a tad more focus on screams vocals that are delivered by ex- That's Outrageous vocalist Doriano Magliano. His screams are very reminiscent of Attack Attack ! frontman, but a little more powerful and varied. Those king of throat-yelled screams are an acquired taste, at first they could sound not very interesting and monotone, but the more you will listen to the more they will grow on you or you will hate them more, it really depends of your taste. I won`t talk a lot about the instrumentation, I already spoke a little bit about the guitars, the bass and the drums follow the Post-hardcore book and never really get out of this circle.
Instead of electro or techno the band choose to go for a kind of orchestral keys and keyboard like Attack Attack ! last album. The lyrics are the downfall of this album they are very very bad and uninspired to be polite. I think the band should have focus a little bit nore on writting something potable, maybe singing about love and heartbreak would have be better then those angry kids lyrics, in fact they should have start a Facebook hate Issue page instead of including those terrible lyrics on their album.
Another thing that bother me is the album lenght, it's very short ( approx. 30 min ). I think they should not have included an acoustic version of Nothing to Lose because this song is already at number 5 on the record so i`t's kind of too close to each other, they really should have wrote at least another song or maybe a cover it will have given the recrod a better runtime.
To conclude, I know a lot of people won`'t agree with me and say that this album is garbage, but take the time to really listen to it, there's no bad song on it, but none of the song standout from the pack. If you can get over those poor lyrics this album can be fun to listen. Don't go into this album with too much expectations as it follow the Post-Hardcore recipe, nothing more, nothing less.
I'll compare their style to a cross between Attact Attack! screaming , A Day to Remember chorus and the base of Periphery rifts ( I mean really the base of it ).
