Some Band History
Incubus originated in Calabasas, California in 1991, and was founded by Brandon Boyd (vocals), Michael Einzinger (guitars), Jose Pasillas II (drums) and Dirk Lance (bass). Later DJ Kilmore arrived (replacing DJ Life). After playing various shows at private and school partys, Incubus released their first album 'Fungus Amongus' in 1995. They had a hard metal sound with small elements of funk and jazz, which was developed further with the CD 'S.C.I.E.N.C.E' in 1997. The 1999 album 'Make yourself' marked a kind of breakthrough for the band, as they got more recognised by the public (mostly because of the song Drive, which had a lot of airplay). The album was also less metal, and more mellow. With some kind of punk twist and different influences. This was taken further with 'Morning View', released in 2001. A very mellow and good mooded album. With a lot of 'spheric' tunes. After a creative pause the follow up was released, the 2004 'A crow left of the murder'. Dirk Lance was replaced by Ben Kenney of the Roots, as Dirk left the band for yet unknown reasons in 2003.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Incubus released this album independantly in 1995. This was the album which caused major label interst in Incubus and led to them being signed.

The album was written when the guys were 15/16 and really displays their musical skill.

It mixes funk, jazz and metal amongst other genres which makes it a really interesting listen. Lyrically and vocally it is a far cry from Brandons style.
Brandon once said that smoking his first joint opened his creative writing mind and it is something that is really noticable on this album.
The standout on this album is the bass playing of Dirk Lance which is the basis of most of the songs. His slapping and funky bass lines lay down a landscape for the rest of the band. This album also arguably contains Mike Einzinger most difficult guitar playing to date. This album can be compared to some primus work and early red hot chili peppers.

Standout Tracks on this album for me are:

You will be a Hot Dancer
Trouble in 421
Psychopsilocybin
Sink Beneath the Line
Hilikus

It is really difficult for me to describe the general sound of this album so all i can do is reccomend everyone have a listen.
For anyone who isn't a fan of Incubus, or thinks they are too soft or mainstream have a listen to Fungus Amongus.
You will see an Incubus you never thought existed.

4/5 stars

Nice review. It's a little brief on the actual album but well set out. It's by far the most unique Incubus album and it's great the combination of styles.

I got this CD last year for Christmas from my sister, but I want to review it now because its such a good CD.

(1)- Hot dancer - This is a good opening song and it has some good riffs and solos in it. I would classify this one as more of the psychadelich rock and give it a 8/10

(2)- Shaft - Ah this is one of the harder rockin' songs on the album. It has a few screaming parts and a neat crescendo... OK guitar and bass so I give it a 7/10

(3)- Trouble in 421 - Neat song, but I think its filler and they were bored in the studio so it resulted in this song... 7/10

(4)- Take Me to Your Leader - catchy song and catchy riffs. A few solos and overall a solid song... 9/10

(5)- Medium - yeah, the song starts out talking about having a coffee then a steak, then it talks about B.O... I would put this into the category of "wierd incubus songs". I think it has a good beat and give it a 8/10

(6)- Speak Free - This is definitely a early 90's garage band song. I like it and the chorus is catchy. 8/10

(7)- Answer - a funk song and it has some good riffs like the others... has OK everything else... filler... 7/10

(8)- Psychopsilocybin - (had to look that one up) yeah I really like this song. It starts out with a quick verse and then goes straight into a solo or two (or three) and then goes back to the verse a few times and keeps on the solo. Good stuff 9/10

(9)- Sink Beneath the Line - Ah now this is yet another funk/psychadelich song and I like it. Catchy chorus and riffs, good performance on guitar. 8/10

(10)- Hilikus - a good ending for a good CD. Has the "usual" riffs and chorus I like the very ending of it. 7/10

Overall this CD is good for when you're bored or for me; to add to my Incubus collection. If you like Incubus then you will be satisfied, but if you are just getting into them, this isn't what they sound like now at ALL. I was a bit disappointed in their more mellowness in A Crow Left of the Murder... oh well.

great songs, although some of them really better in Enjoy Incubus. Psychopsilocybin, Hilikus, Speak Free (Dirk Lance is crazy), Take Me To Your Leader, Trouble In 421 (amazing Mike's solo) are just great funky songs. 4/5

I love this album. It's really fun, and it's not boring at all. Very spontaneous(sp?).

My favorite song is probably The answer, Hilikus, or trouble in 421.
