Some Band History
Incubus originated in Calabasas, California in 1991, and was founded by Brandon Boyd (vocals), Michael Einzinger (guitars), Jose Pasillas II (drums) and Dirk Lance (bass). Later DJ Kilmore arrived (replacing DJ Life). After playing various shows at private and school partys, Incubus released their first album 'Fungus Amongus' in 1995. They had a hard metal sound with small elements of funk and jazz, which was developed further with the CD 'S.C.I.E.N.C.E' in 1997. The 1999 album 'Make yourself' marked a kind of breakthrough for the band, as they got more recognised by the public (mostly because of the song Drive, which had a lot of airplay). The album was also less metal, and more mellow. With some kind of punk twist and different influences. This was taken further with 'Morning View', released in 2001. A very mellow and good mooded album. With a lot of 'spheric' tunes. After a creative pause the follow up was released, the 2004 'A crow left of the murder'. Dirk Lance was replaced by Ben Kenney of the Roots, as Dirk left the band for yet unknown reasons in 2003.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Incubus released this album independantly in 1995. This was the album which caused major label interst in Incubus and led to them being signed.
The album was written when the guys were 15/16 and really displays their musical skill.
It mixes funk, jazz and metal amongst other genres which makes it a really interesting listen. Lyrically and vocally it is a far cry from Brandons style.
Brandon once said that smoking his first joint opened his creative writing mind and it is something that is really noticable on this album.
The standout on this album is the bass playing of Dirk Lance which is the basis of most of the songs. His slapping and funky bass lines lay down a landscape for the rest of the band. This album also arguably contains Mike Einzinger most difficult guitar playing to date. This album can be compared to some primus work and early red hot chili peppers.
Standout Tracks on this album for me are:
You will be a Hot Dancer
Trouble in 421
Psychopsilocybin
Sink Beneath the Line
Hilikus
It is really difficult for me to describe the general sound of this album so all i can do is reccomend everyone have a listen.
For anyone who isn't a fan of Incubus, or thinks they are too soft or mainstream have a listen to Fungus Amongus.
You will see an Incubus you never thought existed.
4/5 stars
