Review Summary: I love The Devil Wears Prada, but I didn't like how they didn't take their songs so seriousely. However, then came Zombie EP, and I bit my tounge.
With the Devil Wears Prada, you can usually expect goofy names and strange screaming. But with their first EP Zombie EP, it looks like they are actually taking their songs a bit more seriousely. We can only guess that the reason they chose zombies as an EP theme is that zombies are the big thing these days. Lets take a look at the songs:
Escape: Opening the EP, Escape starts off with what sounds like a thunderstorm, as the instrumentals slowly fade in. Then suddenly, the drum starts beating, and Mike Hranica belts out a loud and deafening bealch that sparks off the intensity of the rest of the song. With some curious piano pieces, a spot on clean vocals part, and some interesting audio tracks like shotguns firing keep the song interesting and keeps you intruiged.
Anatomy: Immediately after Escape, the sound of a chainsaw being revved up jumps out. This then leads into some ear splitting breakdowns and intenst instrumentals. This song continues the feel that Escape started. Its intensity keeps the song alive, with fast paced drumming and more catchy clean vocals. It keeps the spirit of the EP alive, and prepares you for the next song.
Outnumbered: After Anatomy breaks off, this leads into what sounds like a public service announcement talking about infected humans, or zombies as we can assume, are attacking and that the human species is at risk of extinction. "We are the outnumbered" ends this announcement, leading off to some mischevious guitar, and a particularly frightening scream from Mike. This is probably the best song on the CD. Its heavy, features impressive vocals, screaming and clean, and you can feel the danger and urgency within it. Also, i love the piano near the end of it.
Revive: Revive tells how the survivors have escaped and now believe they are hopeless and need to find a way to revive themselves. It begins as you'd expect, with intense screaming and instrumentals coupled with some glass breaking, but after the first clean vocals chorus, it breaks off into some piano appregios, then shifts to what appears to be a choir singing. This brings anothe level of creepy and strangeness to it. After the second clean vocals chorus, this fades into a nice piano solo, acting as a breath of fresh air from all the intensity. The piano then fades into more rain, some footsteps, and a few shotgun pops.
Survivor: This is the slowest song of the EP, but doesn't lose the intensity we've come to love. It gives an air of mysteriousness to it. Where this song really shines is in the middle, during the clean vocals. Its powerful, with perfect harmonizing and equally stunning instrumentals. The rest of the song carries on the same way, leaving a satisfying ending to the EP.
Overall, i was very impresed with how it turned out, and was surprised by how much fun i had with it and how much i actually loved it. I highly reccommend it to anyone. There is a bonus track, but it only includes Danger: Wildman live and Outnumbered live. Either way, you should not pass this up.
