Review Summary: New Again? More like Taking Back Sunday Blew Again.

After the lows of Louder Now which I didn't really care for all that much, I had very high hopes with New Again because Taking Back Sunday decided to reinvent there sound once again. They lost Fred on guitar which I suppose was okay because as much as I loved him in Where You Want to Be, he didn't really stand out at all on Louder Now, so it was probably the right time for a change in the band. They instead picked up Matt Fazzi, and he...well I don't know anything about him because I can't name one single guitar part form this album. I've heard this album probably ten times and I can't name any moment on guitar or bass or drums. Only vocals.

But the vocals aren't great on this album either. Remember the only good parts of Tell All Your Friends and the best parts of Where You Want to Be being the cool vocal trading going on between Adam and John and Adam and Fred? Well Adam and Matt don't do that at all. There are barely any harmonies even on the album and I still think that Adam does all of those himself. They cut down on the trading and harmonies a lot on Louder Now but they are pretty much all gone completely on New Again. And that really hurts the album, making it really really boring for the most part. Like the title track. That's the first song we hear on this album and maybe one of the worst songs they've ever written. It lacks any sort of catchiness in any way and doesn't even have the old Taking Back Sunday gimmick to carry them through to greatness. It's simply a bad song.

In fact a lot of songs are like this. Sink Into Me is very similar except it does sort of have a catchy handclap thing, but the song itself isn't very good. Lonely Lonely, Summer, Man, Catholic Knees, Capital M-E, and Carpathia all follow this boring formula of having nothing really catchy going on at all. The only good parts of the album are the two ballads Where My Mouth is and Everything Must Go, and the two upbeat tracks Swing and Cut Me Up, Jenny. And even these four aren't that great; they would barely stand out on any other Taking Back Sunday album. At least the production for this album is pretty good but the songwriting is awful. Looks like Taking Back Sunday should go back to being Old Again. Well...we'll get to that...

Since when did individual guitar and bass and drum parts have names....?

This is exactly why you shouldn't be reviewing music. Music is meant to be taken in as a whole, and it is not just the sum of its parts, or one part for that matter.

Actually, my argument is not full of holes. You could have said "I can not name one memorable guitar part I had heard", but no, you said "I can not name one guitar part." Implying that they have names. Actually, your counter argument is the only thing full of holes here...

You ask for constructive criticism and fail to listen when it is provided, and on the rare occasion you DO listen, it's in one ear and out the other and the next review is a carbon copy of the one prior....

OK. Stop writing reviews so fast. You give absolutely no time in between them and that makes it more difficult to develop good writing technique. Re-read your reviews a couple times to make sure A. There are no spelling/grammatical errors and B. That it makes sense.
