Oh how predictable are the memebers of this site. I say this because I know the second I call Silverstein hardcore punk, that I will get a flood of comments telling me that I am wrong or that hardcore punk isn't even a real genre, but I will boldly call Silverstein hardcore punk because that is how I see them. Well, I'm done wasting time on this introduction and start doing what I should be doing, reviewing this album.

Silverstein contains the following members:
Shane Told: Vocals
Paul Koehler: Drums
Neil Boshart: Guitar
Josh Bradford: Guitar
Billy Hamilton: Bass
Additional Talents: Shane does a little bit of guitar work and Kyle Bishop does some screaming on the title track, When Broken Is Easily Fixed.

Instrumental: The guitarists are very good. You can tell that there are 2 guitars at work at all times and even a couple short solos, something you don't see alot these days. There is not one track that doesn't grab out at you with it's impressive guitar work. The drumming isn't something that stands out, but it is not horrible, just average. The bass is hard to hear, but im sure it's good because, well, how could it not be with such talented guitarists? The instrumental gets 8/10 just because the drumming isn't as good as it could be and the bass can't be heard that well.

Vocals: Dynamic is the first word that comes to mind. Shane blends his brutal screams and melodic singing perfectly. It almost sounds like they have a vocalist and a screamer. Also, Kyle Bishop's screaming in the title track is awesome, perfectly fitting with the song. The vocal work deserves a solid 9/10 (The screaming on Discovering The Waterfront is better)

Lyrics: The lyrics are outstanding. Clever and spanning over several subjects, ranging from relationships to things that I can't exactly place. They also have some pretty good imagery. Good lyrics, although I don't think lyrics really matter. 9/10

Standout Tracks: All of the songs are good, but my personal favorites and songs I would recommend are: Smashed Into Peices, Giving Up, November, Bleeds No More, Hear Me Out, When Broken Is Easily Fixed, and Friends In Fall River.

Overall Effect: This album combines dark, depressing, and upbeat sounds very well. You feel hopeless, sad, and happy at certian points in the album. The sound can be compared to bands like Senses Fail, Taking Back Sunday, and Story Of The Year, to name a few. Great sound, deserves no less than a 9/10

So, hopefully I have made it clear that this album is fantastic, with the greatly talented guitarists, amazing vocal work, and great effect, how could I rate this anywhere below a 4.5?

i dont think they sound at all like MCR, i hate MCR, they suck and they really sold out. i have never heard black flag, so i stick to my categorization, and is there anything i need to improve on with this review, bearing in mind that that arguement you got into with "me" on my zebrahead review wasnt actually me, but someone who either lives at my house or somehow figured out my password? This Message Edited On 12.30.05

For me, Pop-core fits the best I have not really listened to this album, but the new one is a nice listen every now and then.

The review is ok, though a bit too 'hyped' for my taste here and there. Maybe try to write a bit more 'neutral' so to say next time as a suggestion. Aside from that: Keep it upThis Message Edited On 12.30.05

Rating is a little high, but pretty good aside from that. I can't get into this album that much because I heard Discovering the Waterfront before and they have just improved so much since than.

Also I noticed how you raved about the guitar section for Silverstein than later said My Chemical Romance sucked. Listen to Thank you for the Venom and than come back about the MCR comment. Even if you despise their vocals the guitars are great in that song.

Also what did you think about Discovering the Waterfront compared to this? This Message Edited On 12.30.05

nice review good. and they are way better than MCR. I don't really like ether but MCR never sold out. Selling out is making music you don't like just to make money. MCR likes there music. Even though most don't

If most people didn't like their music they wouldn't be famous and making millions of dollars.

thats not what he meant though, he meant that they make music that they dont necessarily like, but seems to draw alot of attention so their fan base grows to a ridiculous number of musically moronic fans to mindlessly buy all the crap they put out, just so the sell out band can get money, although bands sell out by putting out a bunch of crap with their names on it so people buy it and the band gets millions.

nice stutterfly reference, i reviewed and we are bled of color, but it was deleted in the crashThis Message Edited On 02.05.06

The lyrics are outstanding?!?!?!?!

no, I won’t let it go. douse myself in gasoline. so don’t save me when you come into the fire. I’d rather die than have to see your smile. -

There lyrics are God awful. There cliches that have been used a million times over and to be honest pure poo.
The band are unorigional and just part of the new wave of generic psuedo -"emo/hardcore" that has been flooding the mainstream these days. this album gets a 1.5 from me

the matter of lyrics being good or not, while it doesnt matter if the music is good, is completely and fully the opinion of the listener, and in my opinion, the lyrics are good. also, if you dont like the album, dont look at the review, im sure you have better things to do than look at an "unoriginal, new wave, generic, emo-hardcore" album reviews.

I remember when I first heard this alum. My girlfriend told me I visibly flinched in pain when I started making out the words.

Flinching never gives a true indiciation of the pain one feels though. Very, very cliched and immature effort. Techincally pretty solid though, IMO.

Talented enough guys, but this album was ruined lyrically from the get-go.

Ugh, this is probably my least favourite CD in my collection. I bought it after hearing Giving Up off a sampler CD I got from Thursday's Full Collapse, and thought they sounded good. Boy, was I disappointed. Very dull and uninspired lyrics, and the music itself was pretty ordinary.

i really want to see the audition for american idol where a contestant attempted to sing smashed into pieces, but the youtube.com removed it. does anyone know where i can find it elsewhere? and as for penguin of doom, tam-tam, and captain civic, why dont you give me some samples of your own amazing and mindblowing lyrics, and thanx for mentioning the review, which is mainly what these boards are about.

you're a good writer, just not a good lyricist. those , i assume, are poetry and not lyrics, i'd say that you should stick to poetry and let someone else bear the burden of song writing, assuming that you are in a band. not to put you down though, those are better than my attempts at doing anything of the sort, and, aside from the most recent finger bloody stumps thing, some of the most excellent blogs i have ever read. thnx for actually giving me an alternative instead of just stating that the lyrics for silverstein arent good, but i stand by my review none the lessThis Message Edited On 03.09.06

I'm not a fan of this band, really... I think the guitarist do have talent, but other than that, i'm not really interested..
The lyrics are awful, cliche and chessy.. I also don't really dig the pop-punk vocal with the screaming thing... They're more like a pop-punk+scream+heavier guitar i think.. And oh, i saw the american idol contestant that you're talking about, it was really really funny, because when he switched from the screaming to the melodic singing, it sound so bad without the instrument playing music behind it...

i didnt read all of them, but hey, take a compliment without calling me retarded, thats just not necessary. anyway, i looked at your thing on purevolume. the guitar great, but the screaming could use some work (no offense), the drumming is ok, and the bass i can actually hear, so nice job with that. what do you do in the band? just curious. as for the lyrics, they are pretty good, so i compliment you, just dont call me retarded this timeThis Message Edited On 03.10.06

It's not a band. I wrote 4 songs for a school project. Though I'm only a guitarist, I conducted the drums and vocals to what I felt was necessary as I wrote every part (lyrics included as you've probably noticed from this argument). I played guitar, bass, and sang background vocals for when my vocalist couldn't fulfill what I needed on vox. I wrote everything, though only a senior in high school. To this day I think it's pretty tight, though I know I could improve on it. However, back on topic, it's still superior to Silverstein in ever way possible. Sorry to be a wank. It's just a reality of producing music that isn't a rip off of Grade and Thrice simeltaneously. At least I had a few other influences. I guess FSF and A Day in Black and White count as that.
