Review Summary: Why has this been ignored for so long?
I know people like the Killer’s. Yeah all you naysayers out there still claim the old “the Killers suck”, yet I know that these naysayers have all at one point enjoying one of their songs. So why is Baumer, their much more outstanding bigger brother so ignored? As I write this review,
Were it Not For You has been out for three years and all that is there to show for it is 3 (one of which is my own) ratings. I just can’t comprehend how this has been ignored.
This album has a ton of great things going for it. The reason I brought up the killers earlier is the fact that this band is
incredibly similar, only substantially better. The vocals of Chad Rochester are miles better than those of Brandon Flowers and his range greatly out powers his, yet they sing in the same style (“In Your Stead” and “Hard Drug” show him really allow his vocals to shine). The synthesizer lines, guitar rhythms and general musicianship are much hookier, stronger and catchier then most the Killers (yet sound very similar). All-in-all this band creates some truly wonderful Dance/Synth Pop that anyone who likes catchy music can enjoy.
However those who do not like incredibly cheesy/clichéd lyrics should
STAY THE HELL AWAY. There are some real clunkers of lyrics on this album. The sad thing is that the best songs on this album contains some of the worst lyrics. “Lucky Strike” for example compares love to cigarettes (“you say it’s cool and keeps you thin. . . baby you’re up to a pack a day”), yet lucky strike is possibly the catchiest song on the album. The lyrics are bad, and do bring down the quality of this album immensely.
However lyrics are not everything in an album. This album is really catchy and contains some really amazing work that “has a good beat and you can dance to”. This band is better than the Killers yet got none of the same airplay or money. This album is truly great and fans of the Killers or Dance Pop in general should really not avoid it.
