Review Summary: How could I listen to a record that's this stupid.
I'll be honest here. I used to love simple plan. Back in the ***ty days of my elementary years, mostly in grades 5-8 where getting picked on where it has always been considered fun to beat someone simply because they look like a ginger but dammit. They had it coming. Anyway, the music that I would instantly listen to so I could crawl away from the world was simple plan's music. Looking back on that now, I realized that I wasted so much time listening to them.
One of the albums that I listened to probably the most was Still Not Getting Any... and it was again a big mistake but we must ask ourselves why is listening to Simple plan a big mistake. For one, the lyrics are very depressing but it's not the kind of depressing where it’s thought provoking and the thoughts that usually come to our heads are intelligent and emotionally in depth. Simple plan tries to incorporate these lyrics into their songs except the problem here is that the lyrics sound stupid. For example, here are some lyrics from "Welcome To My Life"
"No you don't know what it's like to be like me to be hurt to feel lost, to be left out in the dark. To be kicked when your down, to feel like you been pushed around. To be on the edge, you’re breaking down and no one is there to save you. No you don't know what it's like"
Let's focus on the key words here "No you don't know what it's like". Obviously this must be a conversation between a Jock and a kid that nobody even knows. Let me ask a question. How would a jock who is picking on this kid and who is totally ignorant, not very emotional and very successful person who probably gets a lot of head understand the concept of what this kid goes through? He rarely wouldn't and for those simple plan fans who think of using the song "Shut Up" as a defense for the band not promoting people to be depressed, why then does the lyrics say "Shut up, shut up, shut up. Don't want to hear it”? I mean sure the lyrics go on and say "Nothing you say today is going to bring me down” but if he/she doesn't have a problem with individuals saying what they feel, then why tell them to shut up in the first place. It's kind of like people who are depressed but don't think they are.
As for the sound of Simple plan, no improvements have been made. Not even slightly. Its sounds a lot like their debut. The problem with their sound is that simple plan tries to be ether Blink-182 or Good Charlotte. It’s doesn’t combine the two together and making it half-ass original. Copies of blink songs from simple plan on this record are “Thank You” and “Jump” and copies of Good Charlotte songs are “Shut Up” and “Crazy” The only reason why people listen to the first album was for Mark Hoppus' work with Simple Plan in the song "I'd Do Anything". But here, there is no artist or artists to come in and get people to buy the record. It's all filler except for the singles and they all sound the exact same.
At least with Goths, they don't really give a ***. They embrace who they are and accept it's positives and negatives. Where as Simple plan in our society has been categorized in the "Emo" Culture. Probably one of the most useless and mistaken cultures ever. No upgrades from Simple Plan here. Just an awful record with a sound that makes the listener bored and lyrics that are stupid and hallow that are actually promoting death unintentionally.
