There's a link to AOAA's Facebook status where they bash my review in the comments. Make sure you check it out, it's funny as hell.
Annotations Of An Autopsy started off as a deathcore band. Combining simple instrumentation and crazy low growls, shrieking highs, and way too many pig squeals, Annotations made that their sound. I was never too much into them until The Reign Of Darkness came out. The Reign Of Darkness is a crushing death metal album that most people loved, even death metal fans who despise deathcore liked this album. Then come the Dark Days EP, a straight up Brocore release that sounds like Emmure had sex with LIFERUINER. However, Emmure and LIFERUINER pull it off better than Annotations do. Shall we break down this ***? I think so.
Instrumentally this album is a chugfest. The guitars just chug and chug and chug 'til they can't chug no more. When they can't chug anymore, they shove in a weird sounding chord every fourth beat. And then chug and chug again. All the drummer would really need on this album is a three piece kit consisting of a crash cymbal, a snare, and a bass drum. The same beat is consistent through all the songs, a "cymbal cymbal snare cymbal cymbal double bass roll repeat" beat. Does this band have a bass player anymore? Or did the singer eat him too (that was mean.) I sure can't tell. The bass is completely inaudible amongst the boring chugfest of this album. If the bass is there, it just chugs as well through all four songs. Honestly, the vocals aren't bad, even if they are just chants and lows. For brocore, the vocals are fine. Lyrically, the singer must have just stopped reading. Stage Breaker, the first released track, and the last song on the EP, starts off with "Pure ***in' hate!" Isn't that brilliant? No. In the same song, gang chants of "There is no love! There is no respect! All we have is hate!" or something along those lines, and then followed some other chant about not getting along with your bros and then "It really hurts me, I'm ***ing miserable, I don't care about anything anymore, I don't believe in us." in a low growl. You can tell he doesn't care about anything anymore, because they released this. The lyrics are atrocious. Bands like Emmure have better lyrics, by far. The song titles are also very bad. "Buried In A Bad Rep". Wut. They will be buried in a bad rep after people listen to this disaster. "Reznov". Reznov is a character in Call Of Duty: Black Ops. Really? "Dark Days". Okay, a title track. But they sure as hell are in dark days now after they go broke from this shit. "Stage Breaker". Are they referring to the vocalist? Cause he could easily break stages with his weight. This EP is actually cheaper than a pack of condoms. Coincidence? I think not.
While this album is a little bit of a guilty pleasure because I enjoy breakdowns, it really does suck. A lot. I honestly, have no idea what they were thinking. It's not my place to question an artist's choices because obviously, this is what they wanted to put out, but seriously. What the *** is this. If you liked The Reign Of Darkness, stay away. If you liked Before The Throne Of Infection and Welcome To Sludge City, I guess listen to it, but I'd still stay away. If you some laughs, listen to it.
Recommended Tracks:
None. But listen to Stage Breaker for a cool, but very unoriginal and boring breakdown of a song.
