Major genre changes are hard to swallow. Especially when a seasoned ska/punk band turn into metalcore. Call me crazy, but the Suicide Machines' new album 'War Profiteering Is Killing Us All' is a freaking hardcore album. Now before I get screamed at, yes, some of the tracks on here return to the previous "fun with ska trumpets" sound. As for the majority of the album, the heaviness of the music has increased from the previous TSM albums. 'A Match and Some Gasoline' had some pretty heavy stuff on here. But noone would ever think that a few songs from 'A Match' would be the future for The Suicide Machines.

A downside to the new sound is the repetitivity of the songs. Almost every track on the cd sounds the same, if not similar. Not to say that the songs lack in quality, it's just a lot of the same. They actually sound a bit like Rancid in their cd, Rancid2000. They have that ferocious intensity with the non-stop screaming. Another issue are the short tracks. This is one thing that I have always disliked about the band. Their songs are just too short. That's all I can really complain about. The rest of the album is just good old-fashioned clean family fun.

The first track "War Profiteering Is Killing Us All" is just one of the tracks on the album that capture the metalcore feel of this new album. It starts off with intense screaming and pounding bass. The music in the song is very good. The guitar riffs to the drum beat, but this all gets too similar with further listens. The album seems to lose it's intensity, not only mid-way through, but with further listens. That's really what kills this album in the long run.

But on this album of different genre, you will find a song with their old formula on it. That song is "I Went On Tour For 12 Years..." It has that old ska feel in it, The song is not the new metalcore style at all. It has the funloving picky guitar and smooth singing feel from their previous albums. But then about halfway through, it turns into screamo. God Dammit. Well, I came to this album expecting ska/punk and I was really surprised with what I was handed.

Don't be mislead by the band name. The Suicide Machines have made a big change. Even bigger then Sum*41 did for Chuck. Please, take my review into note. Don't be fooled. If you dislike metalcore and hardcore, then you will despise this album. If you like that sort of stuff, then check this out. All I know is, Suicide Machines have really changed. I'm curious to see where it gets them.

I heard a song on tv from this album and I liked it, but I don't know which one it is.

Did you realize that you avatar of your dog has a second picture that flashes on after a while, but lasts for a couple seconds only.

idk their second cd Battle Hymns was almost the same as this one where it switches between a really clean ska guitar to a hardcore screaming

I wanted to get this cd to add to my collection of Suicide Machine albums. But, I don't know if I want ANOTHER political based album though. Is this all political songs?

Good review, short and to the point.

You could definately see the change coming from the bands last album. "Destruction By Defintition" was awesome, and now the Suicide Machines have just jumped on the bandwagon.

how exactly have they jumped on the bandwagon?

1.They ditched their 3rd wave ska roots and started playing straight up hardcore music. The Suicide Machines have always had a lot of punk and hardcore influences, but now they have completely dumped their 3rd wave ska feel simply because it is not cool anymore.

2.Now, the Suicide Machines are suddenly very active in politics. Trashing George Bush, just like other pop-punk and hardcore bands. The title "War Profiteering Is Killing Us All" is a ridiculous title name, because if it was true than we would all be dead. The Suicide Machines and many other punk bands have no reason to discuss politics, because they have no clue what they're talking about.

Those are my only two reasons, but they are huge reasons.

Zebra is correct. Almost every band nowadays has gotten involved with George Bush. Also correct, ska is dead for the time being. :upset:

uhh yeah they write about politics. but they havent jumped on the bandwagon with politics. Steal this record had some songs about politics and a match and some gasoline most of the songs were political. its not like they all of a sudden started writing about politics cuz its "cool"

The title of the album is a hyperbole, and not to be taken literally. "War Profieteering is damaging the ecosphere, re-instigating 3rd world conflicts and problemmatizing relations of global governance" doesn't have the same ring.

It's an OK record, 3 is apt. They always had that political edge, but like most bands currently, they're projecting a very homogenous and bastardized version of the left by merely borrowing certain ideals and rhetoric that is often easier said than done.

That being said, the music is a little homogenous as well, which is why I actually like the short structure of the songs here: Blast of riffs, screaming, mellowed-out ska breakdown, climax (more riffs and screaming), song's over. next song.

good review.

im undecided on my views about hte politics, but i can assure you that any reference to "metalcore" is most definitely unfounded when dealing with this album. i'm not one to quibble over genres, but this gross mis-classification of the sound could put people off who would otherwise like it.

meh review, amazing album. You dont seem to be very educated on the Suicide Machines, or metalcore, or music for that matter. There is not a lick of metal on this cd. yes, there is old school hardcore, but no metal whatsoever. I think this is a superb album, and definitely better than A Match. And I also dont see how any of the songs are indistinguishable from each other. Its a very diverse sounding record.

Good review, a bit biased though, sounds like you have a problem with hardcore more then you do the actual album and in no way is this metalcore and I'd have to disagree with you saying that all the songs sound the same. Great album from a great band.

Lol at calling this metalcore. This is skacore, but a little more emphasis on core than before. Also, this is their second best and it rules.
