North Carolina’s Between the Buried and Me have always been one of those bands ignoring what is trending and continued on doing their own blend of progressive or experimental metal depending on who you ask. Now departed from Victory Records and signed to Metal Blade Records BTBAM have unleashed their latest EP entitled, The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues and best way to put it is, “It’s about to get weird.”
Now I will be honest I’ve always kind of just nodded along when someone talks to me about BTBAM. So where are we at now, The Parallax, eh? What does it mean, “The apparent displacement of an observed object due to a change in the position of the observer.” Well why didn’t you say so. Specular Reflection begins like a sequence out of a Spielberg film before digressing into the spectacular riffing chaos that BTBAM have become known for. The song is constantly moving forward and refuses to get caught into the trap that most songs over four minutes face, which is repetition, lulling the listener to sleep. Between the Buried and Me escape this common issue, and manage to keep the machine pushing forward cohesively, although I have never been a huge fan of their clean singing but that’s just me.

The EP is very intriguing as the band continues to be more experimental they maintain such a high level of continuity, which is remarkable, since many bands fail attempting to do the same. The Parallax is an experience, it incorporates so many different elements and shaping and shift them together to make one kick ass metal symphony that is near mind blowing. While BTBAM continue to push the envelope they continue to be very unique and at this point are paying dividends. The Parallax is something very different from the atypical metal by numbers industry that makes up bands today, while it still might not be your personal cup of tea, it is certainly something worth noting and taking a listen. Fusing together so many different sounds and styles, I can’t think of a name any more fitting. If this is a taste of things to come, count me in.

"It's about to get weird" is now my second favourite BTBAM phrase after, of course (someone else do the honours for me):
