Review Summary: 4.5 Good album by the Crue to show they were still a force. The weak spots are all teh songs about sex but that's Motley for you. Take out one of those songs, throw in another different style of song and it could have been perfect
Bands can only live off their image for so long. Putting out a couple of bad albums won't kill them, but they will start to suffer as newer bands come in and the scene changes. That's what had happened to Motley Crue. After putting out two poor albums(Theater Of Pain, and Girls Girls Girls) due to drug and alcohol intake from the band members, the Crue needed an album that showed they were still a force in the music industry. Guns N Roses had come to the top spot and the Hair Metal sound was starting to fall, as things in Seattle started to rumble.
After Nikki Sixx had died and came back to life after a heroin overdose, the band all became sober and dedicated themselves to creating their best album to date. The Crue hired Bob Rock to produce the album, their first time with a producer who would push them to maximize all of their efforts. When it was all said and done the Crue would end up having their 1st number 1 album.
1)Terror n Tinseltown. The opener of the album isn't a song, it's really a lead in for Dr. Feelgood. The 43 second clips has about 20 seconds of Mick playing a guitar solo with Tommy on the drums. Then a couple of voices comein talking about a 17 year old male that had a possible OD. Then you hear a car screeching and then a sound of something closing which kicks in to
2)Dr. Feelgood. Great way to start off the album. Mick's guitar is so raw and sounds great. Nikki keeps it stead on the bass, while Tommy does a good job of incorporating a cowbell into the song. Vince sounds great in this song and does a great job. Also a very sick guitar solo by Mick. 5/5
3)Slice of Your Pie. This song is a complete opposite from Dr. Feelgood. Kind of a letdown honestly after the great song that is before this. Mick has another good solo, and Tommy does a good job on the drums. Vince doesn't really shine on this song. This song would have been better off towards then end of the album or even off the album. The last 1:30 of the song is very repetitive of Vince saying a few things while Mick plays some pretty solid guitar parts 2.5/5
4)Rattlesnake Shake. Almost the same as Slice Of Your Pie. About a girl that needs to do the Rattlesnake Shake. Some horns are thrown in at the end of the song, that gives it a fresh feel. Music is really good on this song 3.5/5
5)Kickstart My Heart. First single released from the album. Nikki penned this after his near death experiece, well he was dead and came back so, I guess near-death? This song is in your face for the majority of the song as it slows down before the big finale as Vince talks about starting the band, and how they have come far. Mick uses at talk box at the end. Tommy's drumming really shines here and Nikki does a solid job on the bass 5/5
6)Without You. The Crue slows it down here after the up-tempo song of before. Song was written about Tommy Lee and his then wife Heather Locklear. Mick uses a slide guitar for the intro and the solo. Vince surprisingly does a decent job here, even though it's a power ballad. The Crue also throw in some strings during the solo that really gives this song it's final punch 4.5/5
7)Same Ol Situation. Written about two lesbians. The Crue really shines here. Everything about this song is solid and the solo is great. Tommy throws in more cowbell and it's an all around win 5/5
8)Sticky Sweet. ANother song about sex. That's what the Crue does best. Mick does another good job on the solo and the background vocals during the chorus really shine on this song. Gets repetitive towards the end like Slice of Your pie. 3.5/5
9)She Goes Down. Doesn't take a genius to figure out what this song is about. Even though it could be considered a throw away song, it's still pretty good. Another great solo by Mick 4/5
10)Don't Go Away Mad. Just a fun song to listen to. Starts off slow and but really picks up at the end. The Crue was just having fun and jamming and it came off 4.5/5
11)Time For A Change. Song doesn't fit the album. It's not bad though. Title of the song is ironic though considering Vince would be out of the band in 3 years and Grunge would soon take over the rock scene
