I only got the Stone Sour CD maybe about two months ago, but I gotta say I'm really impressed. It's some of the best stuff I've heard in recent times. Stone Sour has become one of my favorite bands (along with Tool, Deftones, Godsmack, Metallica, Bush, and A Perfect Circle). It's got a bit of something for everyone- from the acoustic tune "bother" to the reminscent of slipknot "get inside" this CD has something for everyone. The VERDICT: 4/5.

1.Get Inside- This tune will have you headbanging with it's fast and furious riffs and Corey screaming "GET INSIDE!" during the chorus and features a solo by Josh (I think).

2.Orchids- This is a solid hard rock tune with a good melody and fully displays Corey's amazing vocals.

3.Cold Reader- Another solid hard rock tune with some killer riffs and Corey screaming his lungs out in the chorus.

4.Blotter- A humorous song (at least to me) that will have you headbangin.

5.Choose- The Achilles heel of the record. I dunno what's wrong but this tune just doesn't make me feel anything.

6.Monolith- One of the best songs on the record!!! It's got a really cool chorus and a cool solo by (Jim I think).

7.Inhale- Another really good song. Just really well written. Good melody, good riffs and good lyrics.

8.Bother- Well, this is the acoustic hit. Personally I like it but some people have said and I quote "it's the gayest song I've ever heard."

9.Blue Study- One of the standout tracks. Good melody, good riffs, good lyrics. It features a solo by (Got no idea who :) ).

10.Take a Number- Not a bad song but not one of my favorites.

11.Idle Hands- Same as 10.

12.Tumult- This a killer song with killer riffs and ends beautifully with a piano outro.

13.Omega- Just Corey talking.

If you like good hard rock this album is a keeper :thumb:

there is not a lot of information in this review, no real info about any of the songs, no high or low points of the album.....

this is not a good review...

I like the album though and I give it a 3.5/5

EDIT: I'll review it later

You guys want a fuller review? Here you go

Stone Sour is Corey Taylor's, if I'm not mistaken, first band before Slipknot. They broke up, but then got back together to do a side project...They really aren't in a different genre (hardrock/metal) than Slipknot, but they sound, in my opinion, tremendously different...well...different

The Tracks:

Get Inside (3:13)
Kind of basic hard rock track with a nice main riff...the intro reminds me of Slipknot a bit, but that's ok. Corey alternates between fast singing/rapping, softer clean vocals, and screaming. Nice. The lead guitarist actually throws in some Zakk Wylde-esque pinch harmonics at times...we get Verse/Prechorus/Chorus here, and a repeat of the cycle, then we get a bridge with a decent guitar solo. It's not Petrucci like, but it's not bad either. Another chorus after the solo + repeat intro section ends it

Orchids (4:24)
Opens up with some nice basswork, and some odd sample-like things in the background. Main riff is kinda nice, though simple. Corey sings the verse cleanly, it's nice. He sing/screams the chorus, I like how it sounds...another verse/prechorus/chorus section here...they go to a bridge section which sees a return of the intro bassline...then the guitar does some work with a wah, but no distortion...it's funky sounding...volume swell up into a repeat of the main riff before we get another verse/etc section....end on the main riff but with the wah work of earlier behind it

Cold Reader (3:41)
Opens with an odd slide sound thing and goes right into the main riff...sounds somewhat similar to the last one, but not totally. Corey's singing is somewhat subdued on this track at least at first, but it's not bad at all...he screams the chorus though...at least you can understand him in this band...repeat the cycle of sections again...bridge section comes up with some odd...?sample? work...maybe it's not really a bridge, because Corey goes on with another verse/prechorus/chorus...I think it's worth mentioning that there is a bassline here that doesn't just follow the root note...it's not *too* special, but it's noticable...more of that odd sound + Corey screaming ends this

Blotter (4:01)
Opens with some sort of phone message...I think it's Corey, I haven't a clue...wait, no I think it's for Corey...whatever....opens up with a moderately fast riff with nice bass work...Corey kinda screams/kinda doesn't the verse...he sounds like he's gone crazy...but he mellows out for the chorus...more of the pinch harmonics come into play here, it's not a bad addition...repeat the cycle, you know the drill by now...bridge section at about 2:35...bass work is nice again...not too hard of a line, but I like it anyway...guitar does some bendy sort of work behind that...chugging riff follows that up...and then the tempo speeds back up to the original...like a second bridge...or something...happens after this, it's kinda monotonous...it would've been nice if they had Josh or Jim do a solo there somewhere....

Choose (4:17)
Opens with some tribal-like percussion and some weird synth-y sounds....a cool bassline comes in, which sets the tone for the main riff a few seconds later...Corey sings cleanly in the verse, and the guitars drop out for the first half leaving that nice deep bassline...Chorus comes up, it's kinda long for a chorus..well for this type of music anyway...repeat the cycle...bridge after that...it's the same main kind of chug-like riff...for about 10/15 seconds...wow, wasted space here, they could've done another solo easily...another cycle of verse/etc comes up...some more of the main riff and screaming ends this

Monolith (3:45)
More weird...sample/guitar work to open this...main riff isn't bad, but it's not too special...neither is the chorus riff...Corey does alot of cleaner singing in this one, it's pretty good...the drumming isn't overly special, but it's noticable in this one? I don't konw, maybe it's because the guitar isn't thrilling me...it's not the worst guitar work I've ever heard, not by far, but it's not doing anything for me...bridge comes up...and we finally get another solo...this one is of decent length, about 20/30 seconds or so...I like it, it shows a bit of talent, which this song seemed to be lacking...some more screaming, some nice double bass work on the drumline...and we end...with some weird flange sound

Inhale (4:25)
This riff sounds so much like a Papa Roach song to me...called Revenge....not exactly the same, but very close chord progression...this still happens to be one of my favorite songs, even if it's not too hard/technical/special....why? I happen to like the main riff quite a bit...just...because. Don't analyze it, but I like it. Verse involves sustained chords while Corey sings...prechorus builds back up to the main riff....which is heard in the chorus...repeat the cycle...bridge section comes up, with a decent percussion line to lead into it...Corey does a bunch of Slipknot-esque screaming...the riffs are changed here, a nice change of pace....lead into another chorus or two...followed by a repeat of my favorite riff of theirs...made heavier by dropping it down an octave...I love it...fade out on some odd guitar..bendy downward note...thing....yeah...

Bother (4:00)
Probably the reason you've heard of Stone Sour...this song is a few steps down from everything else they've done...Corey on...acoustic guitar, I believe...I think...I don't remember...some strings are in the background actually...someone's playing a clean electric guitar too....there comes a nice clean solo later which I like....this is a nice song that suffered from overexposure...that's not their fault though

Blue Study (4:37)
Opens with some good drum work followed by a decent, though not particularly hard guitar riff....the bassline is all over the place....much more than a root rider, that's to for sure...clean singing here which is good...the usual structure applies here...solo at 2:27 comes in...it's got...some wah or something in it, it's a cool sounding solo actually...this is another 20 second solo...hm...Corey does some more screaming/louder singing toward the end...there's a nice...I don't want to call it a drum solo, but maybe it is, toward the end as well...before ending after some screaming and more of the original riff

Take a Number (3:42)
This starts off...and it sounds like a lighter track...not as light as, say, Bother, but not as in your face either...this one features another simple, but nice bassline...the prechorus/chorus is slightly heavier, but even then it's not an asskicking kind of song...this song is actually boring me a bit...a solo comes in somewhere near the 3:00 mark...it's not bad at all, totally fits the song, but it doesn't help that this isn't their best track...end after a few measures of main riff

Idle Hands (3:56)
I like the way this one opens up...gets closer to being in your face than the last one ever was...main riff is decently heavy, but not too much. Corey kind of talk/sings the verse, but uses more melody, if that makes sense, in the chorus...after the chorus, there are elements of machine-gunning in the guitars...hm..you know the structure by now, or you'd better, there will be a quiz...and it repeats itself again after a mini bridge...this isn't a bad song, but a solo would've been nice instead of another verse

Tumult (4:03)
My second favorite song by them...this is right back into your face, by the genre's standards with another moderatly fast riff...bass gets some...(synth?) wah work in...really odd, but kinda funky sounding too...that's the main riff...guitars kinda drop out for the verse...chorus is really short...I'm not even sure it was a chorus....bridge at 1:49 involves tom work that matches the speed of the guitar riff...another bridge/continuation of the bridge with some different riffs comes up before going back to the speed. This is a good headbanging song up until the piano outro...which is different, to say the least, but not bad

Omega (2:53)
Just Corey talking about stuff...he makes some interesting points...I recommend listening to it at least once...pay attention...

Overall:

Likes:
Basslines!!!
Decent guitar solos
Corey's singing abilities

Dislikes:
Repetitive structures
Weaker songs here and there

The good songs on this CD are pretty damn good in my eyes...I love the basslines in 9/10 of their songs...they aren't too terribly hard, but they are more than just root-riding guitar hugging type of lines....however there are several tracks on here that drag down the album as a whole...Take a Number comes to mind...I'd give this a weaker 3/5...it's good to pop in and listen to once in a while, and if you're a big Corey Taylor fan, you'll love it...if you're not, it's not bad, but this is not an essential album to any non-Maggot's collection

Now that's an in-depth review

Album Rating: 2.5

I think Bother has Corey playing a semi-hollow body electric. An Epiphone if I'm not mistaken, but I probably am, as I haven't read the magazine article that I read that in in a while.

Overall it's a decent album, much like Nazi Bassist said. I do, however, disagree about Omega. I personally think it's the high point of the album (kinda funny really, when it was probably just an afterthought). Anyway, beyond the points he makes, Corey showcases his understanding of rhythm in poetry to make something more captivating to listen to than 80% of the album. I've heard two or three poems in this style before (anyone know what the style's called because I'd like to search for some more sometime?) and every time I've heard one, I've liked it. Other than that, standout tracks, to me, were Get Inside, Cold Reader (that's the one with him screaming, "No, I won't. I can't. One more time and I think I'll ****ing die....." isn't it?), Inhale, Bother (it's kinda hard to miss; it does stand out just a tad), and whichever one has him scream god**** you at the beginning.

I'm figuring it's called spoken word. Henry Rollins would be the man you'd look up on more.

So true. There are harder and better bands out there.

I must confess I was suprised in a positive way when I heard StoneSour for the first time. I thought "It's that Slipknot screamo guy... meh..." but its really great indeed. Maybe not the best out there, but worth a listen every now and then.

For me: a solid 2.5 - 3/5

i hadnt been playing guitar for very long when i bought this album about a year and half or so ago i think and the best guitar solo i had ever heard would have been off of Nirvana's smell like teen spirit...Even though this album is regarded by a lot of people as Nu Metal i have to say if i never heard the guitar solo on Get Inside i would be playing really bad music today. THANKYOU JOSH RAND! However if i listened to it today i would give it a 2.5 maybe 3/5 it is definitely a bit bland
