Review Summary: The dizzibywots and zun zun zuns save the album from being a zombie baby. There are many excellent melodic death metal albums, but Followbane’s Final Letter From… is not one of them. Ultimately, the key ingredient to a successful album is the level of enjoyment the listener receives. Even an album that is technically fantastic can fail simply because it is not enjoyable. Entertainment is the main goal, and if that goal is not met, certain albums can be mundane. Unfortunately, Final Letter From…’s greatest weakness is that it is mundane. It is not necessarily poor, but there is not enough variation in the songs to justify filling an entire album with them.
When I say the album could use variation, take the drums for example. The drummer often plays blastbeats that stuff the ears with a constant stream of brown sludge. Although the aggravating sound continues for what seems like forever, during the middle of forever, it is still the exact same sound. The drummer’s drumming is horridly monotonous and contributes to the feeling that the album will never end. On top of that, the lead screamer almost always keeps his shrieks at the same vocal range. There is definitely potential there, but it is wasted in this album which would be better off as an EP.
Although the drums and vocals could use tweaking, the guitars are fittingly good. Everything from their dizzibywots to their zun zun zuns tickle my funny bone. Since electric guitars are the backbone for melodic death metal, it is thankful that Followbane made ends meet in that department. The guitars bring the melody, the technicality, the heaviness, the aggression, and other things. Let’s just say that the guitars save from the album from being a zombie baby; one that drools all over you, and while you feel sympathetic for the poor thing (as it cries and moans loudly in your ear), it swallows your flesh.
Overall, this is a decent album, but not that incredible. Everything that has been done in Final Letter From… has been done elsewhere, but better. You will not find much that separates Followbane (in this album) from the massive cluster of other melodic death metal bands. Final Letter From… will probably not be that album you can always come back to, but it is good for the occasional listen. This LP is just the thing for those who need their fix of the more aggressive side of melodic death metal.
