Review Summary: It really doesn't matter if you're a fan or not: Rock Dust Light Star is an album for everyone.
In two decades of existence, Jamiroquai have made some great music and memorable songs. The foundation of their unique sound is mixed from the best elements of jazz, blues and a good sense for electronic music. Their last album called Dynamite was a pretty mixed result, although you can say that for the last two albums. The band just couldn't reproduce their best form presented on the first four albums. So here we are five years after Dynamite, with the new Jamiroquai album, called Rock Dust Light Star.
The return to form is obvious from the very start of the album. The electro sound which was present in the last decade is kind of abandoned now, but in favor of that the blues-funk mix is back. The album starts with Rock Dust Light Star, a song in which the blues and jazz guitar tunes are somewhat forced into the background, with Jay-Kay melancholic voice leading the way. It's a really nice and quiet opener with some background choir that really fits it. Next is White Knuckle Ride - the hit song from the album. It's really predictable and radio-friendly and reminiscent of all the hits the band has produced. Smoke and Mirrors and All Good In The Hood are typical Jamiroquai songs, and right after that comes the highlight of the album. Hurtin' is a really laid back song, with slow rythm and blues-y guitar. It obviously has it's roots deep into blues, and the combination of Jay-Kay's vocals and the gospel-like choir really makes the experience unique. The second part of the album opens up with the ballad-like Blue Skies and Lifeline, before the Jamiroquai tune kicks in on She's A Fast Persuader, which shows us that the band haven't forgotten their past. The last few songs are quite a surprise for everyone - Goodbye To My Dancer has reggae elements fitted into it, and the real surprise is the last song - Hey Floyd. Hey Floyd is a song mixed from elements of reggae, ska and some african music, neatly forming a Jamiroquai package. An interesting way to close the album.
Jamiroquai are back with a great album. Rock Dust Light Star is a perfect presentation of what the band can do. Except for the radio-friendly White Knuckle Ride, there aren't any blind spots on the album. The funk, jazz and blues with a hint from the disco and electro Jamiroquai sound will really fit you. It really doesn't matter if you're a fan or not: Rock Dust Light Star is an album for everyone.
