ENGLISH VERSION:

The most important musical export from the Netherlands is of course Golden Earring, hailing from The Hague. The quartet, which consists of singer Barry Hay, guitarist George Kooymans, bassist Rinus Gerritsen and drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk, has been around for almost 50 years – a record in rock music that even The Rolling Stones (a significant influence) cannot match. To provide an overview of this long and successful career, the set Collected came out last year.

Our country has always had a great love for British and American pop music, and like most Dutch (rock) bands, the lyrics of this group have always been in English. Their older hits from the 60’s and 70’s, like I’ve Just Lost Somebody, Another 45 Miles, Back Home en Buddy Joe are well remembered merely by the older generation of their home country and a few European neighbours.

But then, in ’73, Moontan came out: the album that contained what still today is the band’s most popular song, Radar Love. Because of the ever-recognizable intro and the theme of car driving through the night, the song proved to match the American audience, who put it up as high as #13 in the charts. About ten years later, two of the three biggest hits the group would make followed: Twilight Zone even reached #1 in the United States (with a little help from the newly launched MTV), and also When the Lady Smiles managed to make the Top 100. This made Golden Earring the best internationally known act from the Netherlands, moving past the one-hit-wonders of The George Baker Selection (Little Green Bag) and Shocking Blue (Venus)

After 1984, there was however no more touring outside of Europe, and the band didn’t reach any more worldwide success. In Holland, the appearance of new hit songs also grew less frequent, but if you’ve made over forty at the end of your career, complaints are not in order. The live reputation of these seniors hasn’t at all lessened, and they still perform many enthusiastic concerts. Despite plans of bringing out another album this year, there is of course little chance that they will reach any new heights anymore. For those inexperienced with their music, Collected offers an excellent overview of half a century of great rock music that Golden Earring made. It’s a band that has made the Netherlands proud.

I promised I'd do a review in Dutch sometime, it turned out I'm so used to writing reviews in English it was actually more difficult.

Not specifically Hans, but they do of course. You can just use Google translate y'know. You Americans ought to know the three big singles.

It seemed fun to try for once, that's all. I didn't know so many people were doing it.

Im trying to think of the 3rd single.

When the Lady Smiles. But the other two were much bigger hits in the US, so it makes sense.

Radar Love is awesome.

I didn't know this was you Nag, I thought we had attracted some Dutch users. That would be cool.
This is too, wish I could read it.

But you can, google translate actually does a pretty understandable job.

I think there are a few other Dutch users here, obviously I'm the most active one though.

Had never heard the song Nag, but its pretty good. Also, you should know that us Americans are lazy so not many are going to translate it, just a heads up.

Yeah I was afraid of that already. Well, as long as I can bring some attention to our proudest international achievement in music.

Nagrarok you should place an English version of your review for the sake of completeness.

i know this Dutch band only by name and i would like to be able to read your review so as to find more about the band.

PS: Sometimes I'm thinking of doing my reviews both in my native language (I'm from Hellas) and in English, but from a point further i can't see the actual necessity of such an action.

Indeed it is fun, I was thinking of trying this concept out, and perhaps I will at some point. I can't say whether the review is well written or not, but I'll translate it later.

That would be Twilight Zone, and that rocks indeed.

Translation is up, did it pretty quickly and since it isn't a complete re-write, it's probably not up to my usual standards, but it should serve fine.
