Testament – The Legacy

Album Information
This was the first album from Testament and this album sounds very good for being their first.
Testament was at the first time named The Legacy but they changed the name to Testament. This album has a ghost, creepy evil feeling to it but it is still classic thrash metal sections too.
The instrumental part is excellent and so is Chuck’s vocals but the most of the songs dosen’t have any unique features that makes them special except a few which I will explain in this review.

The Line Up
Chuck Billy – vocals
Alex Skolnick – lead guitar
Eric Peterson – rhythm guitar
Greg Christian – bass
Louie Clemente – drums

Track Information

Over The Wall
This may be one of the album standout tracks, it contains intensive and ferious riffing and has this headbang chorus. It is a heavy and fast song but I think you have to get used to the verse. Very good solo section but the solo is a bit to long according to me but it is a great song to kick off the album with. 4.5/5

The Haunting
This song start with a spooky horror sound and afterwords the guitars enter with some cruel riffing. The verse is not the greatest but the chorus saves the song. The bridge is heavy somewhat melodic and the solo sounds perfect and so does the rest of the song. 4/5

Burnt Offerings
Starts with acoustics and a calm short solo and later the main riff is kicked off. It is not catchy and it sounds a bit strange, it sounds childish to me. Like the previous tracks this song has a fine solo but it dosent make this song better. 3.5/5

Raging Waters
The intro riff sounds a bit heroic and Chuck’s vocals does not a good job here. The song itself has a fast tempo and it has also a good example of Skolnick’s awesome guitar skills. This song is a boring song to me and does not make it to the top. 3/5

C.O.T.L.O.D
Opens with intensive riffing which will remain throughout the whole song. C.O.T.L.O.D means ¨Curse Of The Legions Of Death¨, very cool headline for the song but the songs structure makes it difficult to listen to. 3/5

First Strike Is Deadly
The intro is two voices speaking, one dark voice and one squeaky voice. The song sounds very death metal but the riffs in this song is great, Chuck sings very good in this song and the solo is awesome. The solo sounds very heroic and Eric also seems to play along with Skolnick. This is deffinetly the albums second standout track. 5/5

Do Or Die
Half-melodic riffing in the start and fast drums, the chorus is catchy and so is the rest of the song. The song is kind of melodic in its structure and is one of the albums best songs but I think it deserves a high rating. 4/5

Alone In The Dark
This is the albums most melodic songs, it starts with this cool intro solo and later comes the main riff. It is not as fast as the previous songs and it is heavy, both verse and chorus is great and the solo is one of the best. This song is deffinetly worth your time! 5/5

Apocalyotic City
Starts with a sad acoustic intro followed by bass and soloing guitar, but the song dosent song sounds as apocalyptic as it seems. It sounds like most of the other songs and is not a standout song. 3.5/5

This is a great album but it is not perfect, to me it is almost to much thrash but the band shows alot of skill in their material, to bad that Greg’s bass is not to hearable on this album. This is not a album that I would recommend to anyone except those who love intensive thrash metal. But I can recommend Alone in the Dark and First Strike Is Deadly. Overall album rating will be: 4/5

Ive only heard the song Alone in the Dark and Trail of Tears. Both made me assume that I didn't like Testament that much but I guess its worth checking more of their stuff out.

I think their singer's voice sound's like Dave Mustaine's. Which is a bad thing.

that's why Testament is so good, thrash metal sounds better with a torn voice. Take power metal as example, all bands almost sounds the same. It is the voice that makes the band unique compared to other bands. If you dont like then don't f*****g listen to it, geez!!

One more thing, their later material is more death or black metal and maybe you like that better. Otherwise I can recommend these songs to you The New Order, Return To Serenity, Practice What You Preach and Malpractice. This Message Edited On 10.13.05

I think that ¨The New Order¨ and ¨Practice What You Preach¨ is some of their best yet.

This is definetly better than people say. Solos are in this album are amazing and alot of the riffs are killer. This is really close to the New Order but it lacks in other departments.

Testament made a guest appearance on the Sounds of the Underground tour in Sayreville, NJ. Never listened to them before that, but they put on an awesome show

I'm listening to this recording right now and while it certainly is good, it bears little relation to what the band is doing at present. I like old Thrash. But, the reason why I never really 'loved' it was because of how thin and punky the guitars are. It's a primitive form of Metal that most certainly gets the listener pumped up and ready for destruction on a massive level. lol. But, I really think that modern, so-called Thrash is so much more powerful and has the distinct honor of having the BEST, most crisp and PUNCHY production of all the many sub-genres of Metal. I offer up Testament's The Formation of Damnation, Exodus' Shovel Headed Kill Machine/Atrocity Exhibition and Overkill's Immortalis as examples of this new breed of Thrash that, in my opinion, pummels the old. To my ear, it seems that the practitioners have taken the best of what was at the core of 'Thrash' and melded that with some of the structures and melodic bearing of Power Metal. It's also, as a general rule, much more progressive than its 'Punk' roots. There is no other brand of Metal that effects me as strongly as Modern Thrash and the bands cited above, along with others like Megadeth and Iced Earth. If you're older and have abandoned Thrash somewhere back in the 80's or 90's, I'd press you to check out where the scene is today.

This is a great album, I won't rate it yet cause I've only listened a few times. Best songs atm are Over The Wall, First Strike Is Deadly, The Haunting and Burnt Offerings.

And as far as 80s thrash debut albums go, this is definitley one of the best. I'd say better than Kill 'Em All, but not quite as good as Show No Mercy.
