Review Summary: Evil, heavy, melodic, satan, satan, satan, etc.
Gorgoroth is an extremely controversial black metal band from Bergen, Norway that was founded in 1992
This Album's Lineup:
-Pest (vocals)
-Infernus (guitar)
-Boddel (bass)
-Tomas Asklund (drums)
What can be said about this album? I am absolutely in no way, shape, or form a fan of this band but I was very impressed with this album as a whole. On this outing Gorgoroth strays far from their black metal roots in favor of focusing much more melodic guitar parts and somewhat ambient segments here and there. Even though I'll most likely take a lot of flack for saying this, Quantos Possunt ad Satanitatem Trahunt exhibits many characteristics of the !990's Gothenberg Scene (melodic death metal of course).
The Album starts out with what is arguably the worst track, Aneuthanasia. The track has a bland guitar riff throughout, drums that are along the same lines, and one of the weaker vocal performances on the album. First track is filler? Absolutely. The next track (Prayer) begins with beautifully melodic guitar work, and this is repeated throughout the album. The vocals fit the song well (better than gahl ever did). On this track the drums seem to have progressed quite a bit, instead of having constant blast beats Asklund actually changes it up up this album!!! The drum performance on rebirth is incredibly simple but powerful nonetheless (this of course is probably the slower track off the album, it was definitely a highlight).
Recommended tracks:
*Prayer-The strongest track off the album, this showcases that the black metal "legends" are capable of writing something beyond tremelo picking and blasts.
*Rebirth-Slow and melodic, great guitar work throughout and the vocals definitely work here.
*New breed-Great track but not sure how to describe it honestly. This song gives me the image of a medieval army riding into battle to slay that which opposes them, somewhat epic in my opinion(I'm a nerd, huh?).
* Human Sacrifice-The song song starts off pretty intense with the emphasis on triplets, then suddenly stops. About a second or so later the full bands comes in, new for a black metal band really.
*Satan-Prometheus-good riffs as usual, and surprisingly clean vocals are in here too(very shocking honestly). If you're a fan of this band, this song will probably throw you for a loop.
The album is basically one focus throughout, melodic but heavy. If you enjoy In Flames(old, can't emphasize that enough), At The Gates, Dark Tranquility(older work yet again), or even iron maiden then this album may be right up your alley.
Pro's:
-Good songwriting
-Musical performances are pretty varied(not in quality, that is pretty consistent)
-Great vocals
-Infernus in general
Con's:
-Outro was too short
-More clean vocals would have bumped this to a 4.5 for me
